About The Position

The Design Center Director is accountable for managing the Woburn Components DC (Design Center) and assuring the success of the technical performance and industrialization of new product designs for the DC projects. In addition, they are responsible for the Budget/P&L for the location design center. EBITDA is the bottom-line metric that the overall Woburn site’s performance is measured against. The performance of the Design Center plays a key role, directly and indirectly, on the overall site’s EBITDA performance. The Design Center Director is specifically responsible for the mechanical and thermal design of developed products for both internal and external customers. The underlying objective is to design new products for new or existing customers with a focus on design within the customer’s needs, from both a technical and financial perspective. This includes planning and executing projects that meet cost targets, manufacturability, qualification and schedule requirements. Responsibilities will consist of up-front applications management with customers and salespeople on Statement of Work new product designs, Build-to-Print programs and working with plant teams for production of the developed designs (NPI). In addition, there will be internal R&D programs for future advanced products and improved processes. This will include but not be limited to mechanical design, thermal design, specifying attachment methods, interface materials, finishes, qualification testing, certifications, etc. Follow on duties include product design, testing, and production requirements alike.

Requirements

  • BS degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or related Engineering field required. MS degree preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years in technical engineering role – required.
  • Minimum 5 years of supervisory responsibility – required.
  • Minimum 5 years of project management/team leadership – required.
  • Strong logic and problem-solving skills - required.
  • A solid knowledge of mechanical design and manufacturing operations that include procurement, design, scheduling, manufacturing, test engineering and quality systems - required.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills - required.
  • A “team” player - required.
  • Very strong, demonstrated project and people management skills – required.
  • Capable of working with people in multiple disciplines within and outside the company - required.
  • USA Citizen
  • Experience in working customer applications of thermal products – required.
  • Proficient with SolidWorks – required.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, Microsoft Outlook, and other common software packages - required.

Nice To Haves

  • MS degree preferred.
  • Familiarity with DFAR and ITAR standards and regulations – preferred.
  • Ability to provide thermal solutions using mechanical design, thermal design, specifying attachment methods, interface materials, finishes, etc – preferred.
  • Heat exchanger design experience with plate and fin or brazed plate heat exchanger – preferred.
  • Fabricated metal product design experience – preferred.
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics experience - preferred.
  • Familiarity/experience with aluminum, stainless steel and cupronickel alloys – preferred.
  • Hands-on capability/experience with fabrication, debugging and testing – preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Design Center, Management: The Design Center Director is responsible to provide overall direction, guidance and leadership for the engineers, designers and technicians within the local design center organization. This work will include, but is not limited to, providing technical guidance, prioritization and required development of the necessary skills for the local team. The Design Center Director is also responsible for assuring adequate resources are available to conduct the defined work and when a limitation is encountered, work with senior management to put in place an allocation of resources from other design center locations or preparation of hiring requisitions to expand local staffing to appropriate levels.
  • Customer Contact and Communications: The Design Center Director is responsible for the team’s contact with customers, the sales team and plant personnel, assuring strong and adequate communication between all parties. He/she will work closely with multiple contacts developing new opportunity from concept to production. Proposals / quotations, program management, reporting, conference calls, account visits, product training, and hosting customer visits are all frequent responsibilities.
  • Budget, Cost Estimates, Cost Reductions and Cost Controls: The Design Center Director is accountable to prepare project cost estimates and schedules for assigned work efforts and to monitor project performance against prepared estimates. The Design Center Director is also responsible for preparation of the location design center annual Budget and then monitoring the performance of the design center against that Budget. This includes managing costs and taking action as necessary to maintain performance to plan or coordinating with senior management when a deviation to that plan is anticipated/occurring. The Design Center Director is responsible to proactively report any issues which will likely lead to a deviation from Budget promptly to senior management.
  • Employee Skill Development: The Design Center Director is responsible to develop current and new employees with the skills necessary to enable them to effectively perform their functions. The goal of each design center is to establish itself as a center of excellence within the overall organization for its particular area of expertise. Necessary skills include technical engineering expertise, effective communication in both written and oral presentation and program management.
  • Manage Engineering organization in the development, thermal and mechanical design, testing and qualification of high-performance heat transfer products.
  • Consult with Customers to prepare project specifications.
  • Present and explain proposals, reports, and findings to Customers.
  • Confer with Executives, Management, Sales, Engineering, and Production departments to determine project specifications and procedures.
  • Review, coordinate, and manage projects. Develop plans of action to accomplish set goals and direct the integration of technical activities.
  • Develop and implement policies, standards, and procedures for the engineering and technical work performed.
  • Have knowledge and understanding to assure compliance and enforcement of all applicable Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations relating to job duties.
  • Have knowledge and understanding to assure compliance with Customer and internal standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Create and maintain annual budget.
  • Accountable for all decisions, actions, and directives with respect to job responsibilities.
  • Provide feedback to direct reports and other team members concerning possible issues or areas for improvement.
  • Responsible for progressive discipline with regards to attendance, performance, and all aspects of company policy up to and including termination.
  • Responsible for respective department's overall performance and for motivating team to exceed department goals and objectives.
  • Provide feedback to management concerning possible problems or areas of improvement.
  • As required, other responsibilities may be added to the demands placed on the Design Center Director, as defined and approved by senior management.
