About the role As an Engineering Director at Duolingo, you'll have the unique opportunity to shape the future of language learning by leading a talented team of engineers in developing innovative solutions. This role combines strategic thinking, technical skill, and team leadership, requiring you to oversee project management, drive technical direction, and foster a culture of collaboration and growth Long-form Learning Area You’ll lead engineering for Duolingo’s Long-form Learning Area within our Language Learning Pillar, focused on some of our most immersive and impactful language learning experiences that help millions of users achieve their language goals. In this role, you’ll oversee the development of new long-form formats and the evolution of flagship products like DuoRadio, Stories, and the Learning Path. These experiences are designed to help millions of learners build real-world skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Requirements

  • Experience developing and leading software engineering teams and setting technical direction
  • Consistent track record managing managers and mentoring technical leaders
  • Extensive experience in rapid-growth, consumer-facing, data-driven companies
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in ambiguous, fast-paced, and unstructured settings
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field

Responsibilities

  • Supervise teams under the Long-form Learning Area to help drive strategies and roadmap
  • Develop and manage other managers
  • Balance ambitious 0->1 product innovations, thoughtful iteration on existing features, and engineering excellence work
  • Provide guidance on scalable, high-quality system design and technical decisions
  • Collaborate with product managers, learning scientists, designers, and other stakeholders
