About The Position

The Engineering / Cathodic Protection Technician plays an important role in installing, operating, and maintaining SEMCO’s field SCADA equipment. This includes working with systems such as RTUs, PLCs, electronic instruments, controls, chromatographs, and telecommunications equipment that support gas measurement and system control. In this role, you will also coordinate and work alongside contractors during the installation of conduit, wiring, grounding systems, and other electrical and cathodic protection components. A key part of the job involves testing, inspecting, surveying, and troubleshooting equipment such as rectifiers, interference bonds, and AC mitigation devices. You will also help maintain and improve cathodic protection systems to ensure SEMCO’s underground pipelines and station piping remain protected and compliant with safety standards.

Requirements

  • Possession of a high school diploma or successful completion of the General Educational Development Test required, supplemented with college courses or vocational training in Cathodic Protection or Electrical Engineering preferred.
  • With two to four years of cathodic protection, electrical, and/or gas distribution experience preferred.
  • Good analytical and organizational skills.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Good working knowledge of various personal computer business software applications presently used by the Company.
  • Ability to learn new systems or software packages as necessary.
  • Must maintain a positive work atmosphere through effective interactions and communications with co-workers, customers and management.
  • Must maintain a safe environment for co-workers, customers and the public through adherence to established safety standards and timely reporting of potential hazards.
  • Must adhere to Company policies and procedures related to the code of business ethics, compliance, responsible use of Company assets, and all applicable state and federal laws.

Responsibilities

  • Perform installation, coordination, programming, troubleshooting, and maintenance of electronic measurement and other advanced technology systems including, but not limited to the following: Programmable logic controllers (PLCs), Remote Telemetry Units (RTUs), electronic metering field units including hardware and software, meter pulsers, measurement correcting devices, communication software, pressure and temperature transducers, limit switches, measurement instrumentation, large compressor control panels and auxiliary equipment, chemical injection process equipment (odorizes), gas chromatographs, dew point analyzers, electronic pressure regulator controls, electronic valve controls, installing, updating, and maintaining 24 volt DC electrical systems and components, construction and wiring of electronic enclosures, including mounting, grounding, isolation barriers, IP network communications, 4-20 ma cards, power supply, relays, and fusing.
  • Perform cathodic protection duties as to assure effectiveness and compliance including but not limited to the following: Assists with all aspects of locating, CIS / DCVG surveys, annual reading and documentation of current systems, performing tests on existing pipelines and surrounding soils to determine the rate of corrosion and type of protection needed, ensuring compliance with cathodic protection systems and standards, assist in the research, design, coordination, analysis, monitoring of assigned CP projects, perform cathodic protection repairs and maintenance, complete and maintain appropriate documentation and reports on findings and actions, participate in the development of cathodic protection standards and work procedures, adhere to company internal control procedures and financial processes.
  • Maintain knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature, attending seminars, conferences. Participate in internal and external company training as required.
  • Maintain/Update systems as per company standards.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to all districts as needed.
