This position is located in NCDOT Division 4 and will serve as a Engineering Assistant in the Wilson Roadside Environmental Unit. This position performs a wide range of tasks associated with roadside operations, which includes crews for seeding and mulching, herbicide applications, and landscape maintenance. Work ranges from manual labor tasks such as planting trees, shrubs and flowers, mulching, pruning, operating hand and power tools, and installing traffic and erosion control devices to contract inspections, pesticide applications, and tractor and specialized equipment operation. To improve and provide a safe highway system which includes installing traffic and erosion control devices; operating a variety of hand and power tools, performing various maintenance repairs/upgrades to the highway system, including but not limited to pavement, shoulders, ditches/drainage facilities, vegetation control, litter/debris removal, snow and ice control/removal, and other emergency situations as may be required. As experience, ability, and Department needs mandate, individual will operate the most advanced level of equipment.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and understanding of basic math concepts, principles and practices
  • Knowledge in the use of survey equipment
  • Knowledge in the use of office equipment such as calculators and personal computers
  • Ability to read, interpret and explain construction plans, contract provisions, specifications, and inspection procedures
  • Ability to take notes
  • Ability to learn computer software such as GIS, Outlook, and Excel
  • Good communicative skills
  • Attention to detail
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using a computer or iPad
  • Data entry experience
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret sketches, drawings and written technical documents, such as structure plans and inspection reports, to obtain pertinent structure information
