Requirements

  • Engineer Assistant I: No experience required.
  • Engineer Assistant II: 1 year of engineering-related experience.
  • Engineer Assistant III: 2 years of engineering-related experience, or passing the Professional Engineer (PE) exam may substitute for experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in engineering may substitute for a Bachelor's degree.
  • Doctoral degree in engineering may substitute for a Bachelor's degree.

Responsibilities

  • Applies engineering principles, methods, and techniques to transportation-related activities.
  • Assists during emergencies and inclement weather.
  • Assists with contract administration for construction and maintenance projects to ensure contractor compliance.
  • Creates detailed Plans, Specifications, and Estimates (PS&E).
  • Participates in the Career Development for Engineering Assistants program, including job rotation and training.
  • Performs construction inspection and material sampling/testing.
  • Conducts traffic barricade inspections and assists with traffic control plans.
  • Uses automated design programs and computer-assisted design/engineering systems.
  • Trains less experienced engineering assistants, specialists, and/or technicians (for II or III levels).
  • Performs traffic analysis and data collection (for II or III levels).
  • Reviews construction plans prepared by consultants (for III level).
