About The Position

ENGINEERING AIDE I Under direction, performs engineering tasks such as working on a survey crew, drafting, CAD, inspecting construction and permit projects for compliance to federal, state and local standards and specifications. Gathers traffic information such as: crash data and traffic counts. Assists with special studies or traffic problems. ENGINEERING AIDE II Under direction, performs routine computer-aided design (CAD) for highway, bridge or culvert construction plans. Computes earth work and material quantities. Inspects utility and road construction projects. Ensures quantity and quality of materials and work performed meets specifications. Records materials used and project progress. Inspects county bridge and drain structures and records condition and need for maintenance. Operates survey equipment and records survey field notes.

Requirements

  • ENGINEERING AIDE I (PayGrade E, $50,007.10 - $64,680.01) Required Education and Experience Possession of a high school diploma or a certificate of successful completion of the General Educational Development Test (GED)
  • Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license and an operable insured automobile for authorized travel
  • ENGINEERING AIDE II (PayGrade F, $55,007.80 - $71,147.99) Required Education and Experience Possession of a high school diploma or a certificate of successful completion of the General Educational Development Test (GED)
  • Inspection: A minimum of two (2) years field engineering inspection
  • Survey: A minimum of two (2) years experience with survey/instrument control
  • Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license and an operable insured automobile for authorized travel
  • Knowledge of: MicroStation Connect M.D.O.T. procedures such as ProjectWise filing systems and computer formatting of Field Book Non-project related abilities such as troubleshooting, customization and installation of MicroStation related software Word, Excel, Internet, E-mail and other related software
  • Skilled in: Setting up projects and plan sheets per MOOT standards Using MicroStation/Open Roads Designer efficiently as a drafting aid for engineers
  • Ability to: Update MicroStation/Open Roads Designer using MOOT standards and methods Work in an environment which embraces the county's Dignity Campaign Effectively speak, write and understand the English language Speak and understand a language other than English is preferred Establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, Administrators, Department Heads, staff, Union officials and the public Understand and carry out oral and/or written instructions Accurately organize and maintain paper documents and electronic files Maintain the confidentiality of information Work independently Ability to conduct oneself with tact and courtesy

Responsibilities

  • Plots topographic features and assists with completing design drawings.
  • Interprets and processes topographic field reports for the preparation of construction plans.
  • Performs mathematical calculations in highway plan preparation.
  • Calculates and plots grades for road and sewer profiles and geometric layouts.
  • Draws construction plans and layouts for road, bridge, culvert and other construction projects in accordance with current project needs.
  • Ensures quantity and quality of materials and work performed meets specifications, plans and proposals.
  • Conducts reviews on consultant or contractor drawings for details and quantities and calculations of design work and quantities.
  • Performs field testing on aggregates, concrete and bituminous materials and density testing on soil.
  • Inspects provisions for drainage, boring, jacking pipe, auguring and jacking in casing on water and sewer construction.
  • Inspects construction in development of roads in subdivision and construction in or use of road right-of-way under special permits such as laying utilities of building driveways.
  • Composes design details based on current MDOT design guides, manuals, and standards.
  • Inspects jacking pipe, boring, auguring and casing on water and sewer construction.
  • Operates survey equipment to show physical features of terrain and various topographical features.
  • Verifies proper signing, barricading and safety practices are followed by contractors.
  • Ensures that area of work is properly restored when construction is finished.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
