About The Position

The Engineer I, Engineer II, Senior Engineer, or Principal Engineer is responsible for ensuring that the electrical system is properly protected according to Tampa Electric’s policies and good engineering practice. The Engineer I, Engineer II, Senior Engineer, or Principal Engineer provides consulting services to other departments relating to system protection.

Requirements

  • BS Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering college.
  • Working understanding of power systems
  • Ability to model and analyze the power system and to perform short circuit studies and create/update short circuit models
  • Ability to calculate relay settings for relays at the transmission and distribution level.
  • Ability to troubleshoot substation Protection & Control problems and recommend solutions to problems and issues.
  • Must be able to represent TECO in technical meetings with consulting engineers, customer personnel and contractors.
  • Engineer I Required: Minimum of ­­­­­­18 months, 12 months with FE, of power system engineering work experience is required.
  • Engineer II Required: Minimum of 4 years of power system engineering work experience is required.
  • Senior Engineer Required: Minimum of 8 years of related engineering work experience is required. Related experience consists of: Power system engineering in the electric utility industry including modeling and analyzing the power system.
  • Principal Engineer Required: Minimum of 12 years of related engineering work experience is required. Related experience consists of: Power system engineering in the electric utility industry including modeling and analyzing the power system. Experience must include a minimum of 5 years of direct work experience performing the Duties and Responsibilities of this position.
  • Responding to storms will be considered a condition of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • BS Degree in Power System Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering college.
  • Engineer I Preferred: Registered Engineer Intern (FE).
  • Engineer II / Senior Engineer Preferred: Registered Professional Engineer.
  • Principal Engineer Required: Registered Professional Engineer.
  • Experience in power system modeling and analysis
  • Experience in power system protection is preferred.
  • Senior Engineer Preferred: Minimum of 3 years of direct work experience performing the Duties and Responsibilities of this position is preferred.
  • Principal Engineer Preferred: Minimum of 10 years of direct work experience performing the Duties and Responsibilities of this position is preferred.
  • An understanding of NERC compliance standards related to system protection.

Responsibilities

  • Calculation or approval of all protective relay settings for generation, transmission and distribution systems.
  • Develop and implement the annual underfrequency load shedding program.
  • Calculate impedances for transmission lines and other system components.
  • Assist in specifying positive and zero sequence impedances for new power transformers.
  • Calculate interrupting duty on all circuit breakers and ensure interrupting ratings are not exceeded.
  • Analyze the performance of Tampa Electric Company's (high voltage) electrical facilities, including malfunctions or failure of equipment and make recommendations for remedial procedures.
  • Design and maintain the digital fault recorder network as well as the automatic polling system for digital relays installed in transmission and distribution substations.
  • Assist in selecting protective relay schemes to be used on the Tampa Electric system.
  • Review proposed construction projects and ensure they may be protected properly.
  • Help evaluate new protection products to determine if they are appropriate for the TECO system.
  • Perform fault studies for use by ED Engineering and Construction and other company departments.
  • Assist the System Protection & Control Specialist Supervisor with troubleshooting of relay and control problems.
  • Take part as on-call engineer (technical support) for troubleshooting system disturbances and relay/control problems as required.
  • Provide technical support to the SP&CS Specialists in the area of relay testing and troubleshooting.
  • Work in cooperation with the System Restoration Unit in the event of major storm damage.
  • Maintain at all time awareness of safety in all aspects of substation engineering, construction and operations.
  • Provide technical support in analysis and understanding of distribution system protection and coordination as required by district and area engineering, customers and others.
  • Provide protection related data for other divisions of the company, outside agencies, and Customers as required.
  • Department representative for NERC compliance issues.
  • Ensure department compliance to NERC standards and readiness for NERC audits.
  • Evaluate and comment on proposed new standards and changes to existing standards.
  • Prepare TECO’s submittal for FRCC’s annual short-circuit database.
