About The Position

This role is responsible for the development and design of the site, layout, buildings and structures of the Xe-100 plant. This includes concept development and evaluation, as well as analysis and design of systems, structures, and components (SSCs). This role will collaborate with a multi-disciplined team of engineers, suppliers, construction contractors and other project stakeholders, and support key objectives in deploying the Xe-100 plant that has advantages in safety, reliability, economics and sustainability relative to current day power generation units.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil/structural/architectural engineering or related degree from an accredited institution.
  • Experience with analysis, design, evaluation, and/or construction of civil structures, including but not limited to, industrial structures, commercial and residential buildings, power generation facilities, and infrastructure.
  • Understanding of civil engineering fundamentals, such as mechanics, materials, construction techniques, codes and standards, environmental and economic impact, and professional ethics.
  • Experience and/or knowledge in a minimum of one of the following areas:
  • Experience with site development, grading, roadway, survey, stormwater, hydrology or soil mechanics; or
  • Experience with design of steel structures, concrete structures, or composite structures; or
  • Experience with architectural design, such as claddings, insulation, automation, building components, or waterproofing; or
  • Experience with drafting, such as 2D/3D CAD modeling or Building Information Modeling (BIM)
  • Experience with structural analysis using hand calculations and / or finite element analysis (FEA) software programs (e.g., ANSYS, LS-DYNA, ABAQUS, ADINA, OpenSees).
  • Proficiency with engineering hand calculations.

Responsibilities

  • Support development of plant site/layout and design of buildings/structures through final design and construction of the Xe-100 plant.
  • Perform, manage, and oversee engineering and construction of the site and building structures for the Xe-100 project. This includes planning, monitoring, and directing of the complete engineering efforts through all development life cycles.
  • Apply engineering principles, codes and standards and best practices to design the site, buildings and structures for hazards including seismic, flood and wind.
  • Define, manage, and verify the requirements for the site, buildings and structures. Ensure the buildings and structures perform required functions throughout the plant life cycle.
  • Ensure that the requirements in the full life cycle are timely addressed in the system design (e.g., constructability, testability, reliability, maintainability, safety, flexibility, interoperability, etc.).
  • Develop innovative concepts that can be implemented in a cost-effective and schedule-considerate manner while meeting the needs of customers.
  • Develop and implement risk-informed performance-based (RIPB) design criteria.
  • Assist other teams to perform risk and hazard assessments, such as probabilistic risk assessment (PRA), failure modes effects analysis (FMEA) and hazard and operability analysis (HAZOP).
  • Work with construction teams to evaluate constructability, sequencing, material take-off, cost estimate, schedule development, and modularization concepts for the Xe-100 plant.
  • Identify, define, and manage interfaces with internal and external teams to advance the Xe-100 design.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable local, national, and international codes, regulations, and quality standards.
  • Perform, oversee or assist civil design, such as site characterization, site development, roadway design, and / or plant layout.
  • Perform, oversee or assist structural design, such as steel structures, concrete structures, and / or composite structures.
  • Perform, oversee or assist architectural design, such as building enclosure design, painting and coating, insulation, waterproofing and / or materials.
  • Perform, oversee or assist development of computer-aided design (CAD) models and drawings, such as floor plans, general arrangement drawings, or 3D plant models
  • Plan and perform analysis required to assess the SSCs to ensure they can perform their intended functions and meet technical specifications and design requirements.
  • Perform, oversee or assist structural analysis using engineering tools, including finite element analysis (FEA) simulation software and hand calculations, to assess force / moment, stress / strain, deformation / rotation, degradation behavior, and structural performance of structures and components.
  • Develop Verification and Validation (V&V) plans for analytical tools and support qualification of toolset.
  • Support the assessment of SSCs for manufacturability as well as assembly and integration considerations at the direction of project leads.
  • Write and develop design documentation including design basis documents, technical reports, calculations, and drawings in accordance with applicable procedures.
  • Perform work in accordance with X-energy quality procedures for design and configuration management to ensure project quality requirements are met.
  • Provide independent reviews and acceptance reviews of engineering deliverables and data.
  • Maintain professional demeanor and behavior at all times in all forms of communication.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by manager.
