About The Position

The Engineer Trainee position is part of a four-year Professional Engineer Training Program within the Florida Department of Transportation. This role is designed for individuals who aspire to become licensed professional engineers and take on leadership roles in the organization. The program offers hands-on experience across various engineering disciplines, including Planning, Traffic Operations, Structures, Design, Construction, and Maintenance, with the goal of preparing trainees for professional registration and advancement.

Requirements

• A Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Science in Engineering Degree from an ABET-accredited university or equivalent.
• Proof of registration to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination prior to appointment.
• Ability to obtain the Fundamentals of Engineering certificate within twelve months of appointment.

• Knowledge of transportation engineering concepts and principles.
• Proficiency in computer usage for engineering tasks.
• Strong problem-solving skills related to engineering challenges.

Responsibilities

• Rotate through major engineering disciplines shadowing and assisting professional staff.
• Complete assigned technical engineering tasks of increasing complexity.
• Participate in project leadership and management activities and meetings.
• Perform technical engineering tasks in various phases including Maintenance, Construction, Design, Traffic Operations, Survey & Mapping, Planning and Environmental Management, Materials, and Right of Way.
• Receive instruction and perform engineering tasks in specific areas such as Bridge Design, Traffic Control Devices, and Environmental Compliance.
