About The Position

The Engineer Trainee/Assistant Engineer position at the New York State Department of Transportation involves working under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer. The role includes various duties depending on the assignment, which may be in design or construction. In design, responsibilities include preparing 3D plans for highway and bridge projects using CADD, assisting with bridge inspections, and preparing project reports. In construction, the role may involve acting as Chief Inspector or Engineer-in-Charge, ensuring contractor compliance with specifications, and reviewing plans and estimates. The position may require occasional travel to support department needs and may involve serving in the Incident Command System during emergencies.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering or engineering technology, or proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) and one year of full-time engineering experience.
• For advancement to Assistant Engineer, proof of passing the NCEES FE and completion of the traineeship is required.

Nice To Haves

• Experience in the design and construction of parks, roads, bridges, and recreational facilities.
• Experience with water and/or wastewater treatment facilities.

Responsibilities

• Prepare 3D plans for highway and bridge projects using CADD.
• Assist with bridge inspections, structural evaluations, and load ratings.
• Assist with the preparation of project reports, including project scoping reports and design reports.
• Develop notes and specifications for specialty work.
• Function as Chief Inspector or Engineer-in-Charge on Department construction projects.
• Ensure work performed by Contractors meets contract specifications and engineering standards.
• Review Consultant and Contractor plans and estimates.
• Initiate design changes and orders-on-contract, complete daily work reports, and prepare final documents.
