About The Position

The Engineer Technician III – Prototype Machinist plays a vital role in supporting engineering development, testing, and new product introduction through expert machining and hands-on fabrication. This position partners closely with design and test engineers to manufacture high-precision prototypes, modify parts for testing, and ensure quality builds that meet engineering intent. Requirements

  • Associate degree or technical diploma in Precision Machining, Manufacturing Technology, or related field.
  • Minimum 5+ years of machining experience, preferably in prototype or R&D environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with tight tolerances, various materials, and custom tooling setups.
  • Proficient in CNC and manual machining, including G-code programming and setup optimization.
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM software such as SolidWorks, Mastercam, Fusion 360, or equivalent.
  • Skilled in precision measurement using micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, and CMM equipment.
  • Knowledge of GD&T, materials, and machining processes for metals, plastics, and composites.
  • Understanding of mechanical assembly, fit-up, and alignment for test and production builds.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with different additive manufacturing methods – especially FDM and SLA 3D Printers – is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Machine, fabricate, and assemble prototype and production-intent components to support new product development and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Interpret complex engineering drawings, CAD models, and 3D prints to plan and execute precision machining operations.
  • Set up and operate manual and CNC equipment (mills, lathes, grinders, saws, etc.) to produce tight-tolerance parts and assemblies.
  • Monitor incoming model shop requests for machined and 3D printed parts, ensure sufficient information is provided to complete requests, and collaborate with the team to meet target completion dates.
  • Collaborate with design engineers to provide manufacturability feedback and suggest design improvements.
  • Perform test fixture and assembly builds to support design verification, endurance, and performance testing.
  • Program CNC equipment using CAM software or conversational programming methods when required.
  • Support root cause investigations by machining custom fixtures, adapters, or modified components for evaluation.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and environmental standards under the Regal Rexnord Business System (RBS) framework.
  • Document all work, including setup sheets, part inspection records, and prototype build notes.
  • Train and mentor junior technicians and machinists on machining best practices and safety protocols.
  • Utilize and support upkeep of the on-site 3D printers.
