About The Position

The Submarine Engineering Advanced Capabilities team is looking for an Engineer Structural 4 in the development of the next generation Fast-Attack Submarine, SSN(X) submarine program. This is an opportunity to join our growing team to contribute and influence the Navy's future, premier attack submarine platform. Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • 9 years of relevant exempt experience; or a Master's Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience; or a Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.
  • Strong knowledge of submarine engineering and design requirements.
  • Ability to apply technical principles, theories, and concepts in structural design and analysis.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in working in a collaborative environment to integrate ship systems and structural interfaces.
  • Strong communication skills, particularly in technical writing.
  • Ability to oversee several projects and provide guidance to junior engineering staff.
  • Ability to present to NNS senior leadership, Navy, and government technical warrant holders.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze, research and develop structural engineering specifications involving various materials.
  • Conduct damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling.
  • Utilize software applications such as FEMAP, Abaqus, Teamcenter, Hypermesh, ATIS, DDMS, and MatLab.
  • Learn and execute older government provided software, i.e. FORTRAN.
