About The Position

Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications. Newport News Shipbuilding has an opportunity for a Structural Engineer to join their E12 submarine engineering team. This team provides technical support to the VCS program (new construction) through construction and certification support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience
  • Master’s Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience
  • Ph.D. and 4 years of experience
  • Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program

Nice To Haves

  • Be able to apply extensive technical expertise, and have full knowledge of submarine structures
  • Be able to communicate effectively and clearly present technical approaches and findings Have a working knowledge of shipyard operations, including structural fabrication and assembly and final outfitting
  • Demonstrated history of collaborative relationships with both internal and external customers achieved through strong interpersonal, organization, and communication skillsSpecific knowledge of SUBSAFE requirements is preferred
  • Experience within submarine engineering as well as submarine construction processes
  • Experience with pressure hull dimension/measurement requirements. Familiarity of Tech Pub 1688
  • Be a strong and proactive mentor for junior engineers, aiding them in development and professional growth
