About The Position

Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications. Must Have Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience; Master’s Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience; Ph.D. and 4 years of experience. Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program. This position is for future submarine design. Senior-level structural engineer that provides recommendations for work direction. Works direction is chosen by the engineer unless management or an Engineer 5 determines a more appropriate method applies (which is rare). Primary technical resource to advise the group’s engineers and supervisor. Development of work is at high level that sets the standard for the group and used for reference on group excellence. Engineer 4 personnel are often in a project management role overseeing Engineers 1, 2, and 3. Work is performed individually with little oversite and is normally autonomous. Often, department direction (such as process guides) are overseen or authored by Engineer 4s. Work progress is broadcast to management regular intervals, often with a standing meeting. An Engineer 4 is a subject matter expert in the group, senior advisor to the supervisor and primary technical mentor to the rest of the group. Work sets the standard for the group, is the “face of technical excellence” to the customer and contributes to the body of department work. Analysis is all forms of structure from static analysis to transient shock analysis using classical methods, Femap, NASTRAN and Abaqus and other standard industry software.
