About The Position

Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications. This position is within the ENG-WR group of E92. This person provides engineering review of Visual Work Instructions (VWIs) and other Submarine Engineering Build Authority Documents, primarily within the Structural discipline. These reviews are performed within a model based manufacturing environment. Ensures Build Authority information provided within the VWI is consistent with the applicable technical authority documents. Reviews engineering change documents for applicability and proper incorporation within the build authority documents. Applies engineering and submarine construction knowledge towards the validation of welds, notes, and dimensions for COLUMBIA class submarine construction. Provides training to entry level engineers. Participates in development of processes and procedures. Interacts and collaborates with VWI Developers, Construction Trade Representatives, and Planning Personnel to ensure proper understanding of the work to be performed by and the requirements required of the VWI. Regularly participates in collaboration meetings. Frequently uses collaboration tools such as WebEx and Jabber. Uses Teamcenter, NGP, NX, SAP, and 1Tool daily to complete assigned tasks. Requisition to support engineering review of COLUMBIA VWIs (Visual Work Instructions). Need this position created to not only meet production rate targets across the program but to also support the recovery effort for the COLUMBIA program

Requirements

  • US Citizenship Required
  • Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience
  • Master’s Degree and 0 year of relevant professional experience
  • Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a structural engineer is preferred.
  • Knowledge of submarine technical and build authority documents is preferred.
  • Experience in a 3D Model based environment is preferred including knowledge of Team Center and NX.
  • Some knowledge of SAP is preferred (or other planning tool).
  • Prefer candidates with knowledge/experience with welding and manufacturing principles.
