About The Position

ABS Government Engineering Services (GES) is searching for a Principal or Senior Engineer to assist with ship structure, stability and load line reviews. This person will perform engineering design review and analysis assignments normally involving a major project or several smaller less complex projects. These projects by nature of their complexity and difficulty require the fully competent application of conventional knowledge in a particular field of engineering or science. Through broader and more technically challenging work assignments, the ideal candidate will develop a thorough understanding of policies, methods and procedures. Individual will support U.S. government agencies (US Navy, US Military Sealift Command (MSC), US Coast Guard, MARAD, NOAA, etc.) by performing various classification and certification services for surface vessel.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in Civil, Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, or other related disciplines; an M.S. may be preferred.
  • 5 to 10 years of related engineering experience in a shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, or a classification society.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy in engineering software; experience in software related to stability, such as GHS, NAPA, or other equivalent software required.
  • Demonstrated experience in performing stability analyses in accordance with relevant Rules and Regulations.
  • Exposed to Finite Element Method (coursework or supervised research).
  • Knowledge of related technical disciplines required.
  • The ability to identify, analyze, and propose solutions to problems (i.e., the competence to demonstrate complex problem-solving skills).
  • Good command of the English language.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Familiarity with the ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management Systems (internal candidates only).
  • Ability to obtain a working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management Systems.
  • This position requires access to information that is subject to control by the Export Administration Regulations and/or the International Traffic in Arms Regulations. Any offer of employment shall be contingent upon the Company’s verification that the candidate is a “U.S. Person” or upon the receipt of all necessary export licenses or authorizations that may be required by U.S. export control laws. “U.S. Persons” are defined as U.S. citizens, U.S. lawful permanent residents (i.e., “green card” holders), or any individual granted protected status under the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3)), including asylees and refugees. In the event a candidate refuses or cannot otherwise provide the necessary information for the Company to determine whether such licenses may be required, or for the Company to obtain any required licenses, the Company shall maintain the exclusive right to discontinue the application process and/or withdraw any contingent offer that has been made.

Responsibilities

  • Under the supervision of an experienced engineer or engineering manager, performs detailed engineering review of ship structural plans and stability analyses as assigned for compliance with applicable Rules, Regulations, and contract commitments.
  • Prepared first principal calculations or using computer aided engineering tools to predict the structural integrity of the vessel.
  • Perform classical stress calculations, finite element stress analysis, and fatigue analysis.
  • Use of finite element modeling techniques, primarily FEMAP for finite element model development and NASTRAN finite element solution.
  • Perform Seakeeping Analysis and Structural Dynamic Analysis using ABS DLA/SFA software.
  • Prepare technical reports and work with other engineers to find resolutions to problems.
  • Maintain the technical quality, content, consistency, continuity, and timeliness of action of all assigned projects to ABS standards.
  • Implements and maintains ABS Quality System requirements relative to responsibilities after undergoing ABS Quality System training.
  • Prepared calculations by hand or using computer-aided engineering tools to predict the structural integrity of the vessel.
