Requirements

  • Working knowledge of utility planning principles related to electric power system generation, transmission, and distribution.
  • Thorough knowledge of personal computers and related software applications including load flow and resource planning models.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to develop working relationships at all levels.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, conceptual, and problem-solving skills.
  • Extensive (8+) years of experience in utility generation or T&D systems, power generation engineering, or system operations.
  • Professional Engineer Registration in the State of Hawaii.

  • Experience in project management and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to develop detailed and complex plans such as an Integrated Resource Plan (IRP).

Responsibilities

  • Perform operational planning studies of existing generation, transmission, and distribution system assets for planned outages and operational problems.
  • Investigate and evaluate abnormal voltages and equipment loading; initiate corrective actions.
  • Prepare generating unit operating schedules to meet forecasted peaks and operating restrictions.
  • Track daily system demand, analyze trends, and forecast system peaks.
  • Provide generation and system information required by City, State, and Federal Agencies.
  • Support the planning and integration of renewable energy resources into existing generation equipment.
  • Develop solutions to grid management and control tool issues.
  • Manage growth of distributed energy resources and assess impacts to the electrical system.
  • Provide support for System Operation Department planning processes through analysis of operating performance parameters.
  • Inform and advise Engineering and Planning Departments of immediate and anticipated problems on the system.
  • Review and comment on Engineering/Planning studies, designs, and drawings for system improvements.
  • Perform post-disturbance analyses of major outages and propose improvements to restoration sequences.
  • Provide after-hour consultation to assist dispatch personnel in resolution of power system operating problems.
  • Serve as a back-up for the Operations Planning Manager.
  • Participate in Hawaiian Electric emergency response activities as assigned.
