Position Summary The Metrologist is responsible for providing technical leadership and oversight within the Corporate Standards Laboratory (CSL), ensuring calibration and measurement systems meet local, corporate, and regulatory requirements. This role supports global sites by advancing measurement science, calibration technologies, standardization, and data integrity. The Metrologist serves as a subject matter expert, consultant, and mentor, influencing calibration discipline design, implementation, and sustainment across sites and networks.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Science, Statistics, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, food, or specialty chemical industries.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Lead calibration activities within the CSL, maintaining primary and secondary standards for a broad range of laboratory and production equipment across Lilly's global network.
  • Serve as subject matter expert and primary point of contact for U.S. and global sites on discipline-specific calibration and metrology matters.
  • Develop and approve calibration and preventive maintenance (PM) processes for a variety of laboratory and production equipment.
  • Provide technical guidance on measurement ranges, tolerances, and PM frequencies in support of traceability and measurement assurance.
  • Oversee implementation of intermediate checks for primary standards in collaboration with Quality Assurance.
  • Coordinate inter-laboratory comparison programs for responsible disciplines and resolve discrepancies identified in analyzed results.
  • Direct and supervise calibration execution, including second-person verification of results; immediately escalate and halt non-compliant work in coordination with the CSL Lead Metrologist.
  • Partner with Quality Assurance to apply risk management principles, assess laboratory risks, develop mitigation strategies, and execute associated Quality Plan actions.
  • Represent the CSL during internal and external regulatory audits; lead resolution of customer and compliance issues.
  • Collaborate with Quality to assess deviations from quality systems or procedures, evaluate impact, and initiate corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs).
  • Coordinate with Systems CSQA and Data Integrity leaders on procedural and system requirements, including data assessments, reviews, and remediation.
  • Ensure all activities meet applicable local, corporate, and federal requirements.
  • Own, develop, review, and maintain procedures, job plans, and data sheets related to CSL calibration activities using appropriate document control processes.
  • Collaborate with equipment owners to support proper equipment selection and promote standardization of best practices in measurement science and calibration technology.
  • Influence calibration discipline design and drive continuous improvement at the site, network, and global levels through technical expertise and external benchmarking.
  • Promote global regulatory compliance through calibration education, instrument standardization, and data integrity initiatives.
  • Engage and influence leadership and stakeholders through technical presentations, laboratory tours, and participation in cross-functional focus teams.
  • Consult with internal customers on metrology needs, particularly in the areas of compliance, investigations, and continuous improvement.
  • Communicate forecasted resource needs and technical risks to CSL management; escalate quality concerns to local QA in a timely manner.
  • Mentor and coach calibration technicians, providing technical oversight to ensure calibration activities align with business and compliance objectives.
  • Develop and deliver metrology training for engineers, technicians, and other technical staff, including formal qualification programs.
