About The Position

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight! This role is part of Advanced Concepts and Enterprise Engineering (ACE), supporting Blue Origin’s mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. The team fosters innovation and drives engineering workflows of the future, shared solutions and standards, simplicity and lower costs, and manufacturable design. As part of a hardworking team of specialists, technicians, and engineers you will design and deliver production tooling, handling solutions, and test equipment that make building and verifying solar products safe, clean, and reliable. You will pair sound mechanical analysis with practical commissioning to create robust, instrumented, semi‑automated stations, and document their safe operation, calibration, and upkeep. You will embed quality and operator safety into every design, collaborate closely with Manufacturing and Automation to define process windows and in‑process checks, manage suppliers from concept through acceptance, and support test campaigns and continuous improvement in a fast-moving, cross-disciplinary, geographically distributed R&D environment. Special Mentions: Relocation provided Travel expected up to 25% of the time

Requirements

  • BS in ME/Manufacturing; 2–5 years designing fixtures, handling carts, transport containers, TVAC mounts
  • Instrumented test rig design including the controller and/or DAQ system
  • Basic PLC/HMI integration and robotics/vision exposure; support FAT/SAT
  • Experience with CAD, both creating 3D models and technical drawings
  • Fixture FEA for stiffness/stability; tolerance/alignment analysis; GD&T proficiency
  • Compliance with contamination control, ESD, ergonomics, and safety

Nice To Haves

  • 4+ years; deeper robotics/vision/PLC programming experience
  • Experience designing compliant EOAT/grippers for fragile parts; vacuum/cleanroom fixtures
  • Proven deployment/environmental test support and instrumentation troubleshooting
  • Experience with mechanical and weldment design and component integration
  • Experience with creating fabrication and installation drawings
  • Understanding of common manufacturing materials/techniques, GD&T, and tolerance stack-up analysis
  • Ability to work on multiple projects in parallel
  • Experience with custom machine design: motors, actuators, linear rails/actuators, pneumatics, bearings, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Design assembly fixtures/tools, handling carts, transport containers, and TVAC mounts for solar products
  • Develop deployment test rigs with instrumentation (load cells, encoders, strain gauges, etc.) and safety interlocks
  • Design/develop grippers for fragile panel transfers (vacuum/soft‑grip/compliant alignment)
  • Own designs from cradle-to-grave optimizing (safety, cost, quality, cycle time, delivery, reliability, life, maintenance/refurbishment)
  • Integrate PLC/HMI and basic robotics/vision for semi‑automated stations
  • Perform fixture FEA for stiffness/stability; tolerance and alignment analysis
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing on process windows and in‑process inspection
  • Manage vendor selection, quotes, and acceptance criteria for tooling/GSE
  • Support deployment and environmental tests; troubleshoot rigs and instrumentation
  • Work effectively in a scrappy cross-disciplinary R&D environment with a geographically distributed team

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, vision, basic and supplemental life insurance, paid parental leave, short and long-term disability, 401(k) with a company match of up to 5%, and an Education Support Program.
  • Paid Time Off: Up to four (4) weeks per year based on weekly scheduled hours, and up to 14 company-paid holidays.
