Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines. The A4W Reactor Plant Planning Yard (RPPY) Fluid Systems team (Dept. E83) is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join their team in order to support design and maintenance improvements on the Nimitz class aircraft carriers. This is an opportunity to provide live fleet support to active Nimitz Class aircraft carriers, and identify and develop design and maintenance improvements. The ideal candidate will have experience in reactor and/or steam plant maintenance and design, mechanical piping design, mechanical component design, analytical evaluations (e.g., engineering calculations). Additionally, the ideal candidate will have experience with project management, strong written and oral presentation skills, and be able to clearly discuss complex technical issues. In this role, the candidate will: Perform various design studies (e.g., root cause analysis, design and maintenance improvements, and operational improvements) on assigned fluid systems and mechanical components. Perform liaison services to solve problems identified during the operation and maintenance of assigned fluid systems and components. Conduct hands-on laboratory testing and analysis of testing results. Develop technical recommendation submittals for customer (NAVESEA 08 and NNL) approval. Develop ShipAlt products (e.g., design improvement drawings and instructions), nuclear liaison inquiries. Maintain, evaluate improvements to, and revise engineering drawings and technical manuals. Mentor Junior Engineers

  • Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience
  • Master’s Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience
  • Ph.D. and 4 years of experience
  • Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • Experience with A4W reactor plant fluid systems (e.g., systems/components, maintenance, arrangements).
  • Experience in project management.
  • Experience in technical writing.
