Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines. This position is for Nuclear Engineering department E86 for the Virginia Class (VCS) and Columbia Class (CLB) programs. Specifically, this position is for the Early RPM/Heavy Components Group which provides hands-on waterfront engineering support and oversight for the fabrication of Reactor Plant and Steam Plant assemblies as well as Reactor Plant heavy components. A successful candidate will possess analytical and problem solving skills to resolve technical issues which arise during submarine construction. The individual shall have the communication and relational skills to interface and discuss technical issues with technical and non-technical personnel as well as government representatives, customers and vendors. In addition, the candidate will be willing to actively work on the waterfront to support onsite inspections of problems and provide support to trades during construction, including certain lifting and handling evolutions.
