Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines. The AUKUS SSNA Program is seeking a strong engineer to support the development of the next generation of fast attack submarines. This position will be responsible for working collaboratively with other key stakeholders throughout the SSNA program and will interface with UK’s BAE Systems integrated delivery teams (IDTs) to help design portions of the UK and Australian SSNA nuclear-powered submarine.

  • Engage with shipyards, customers and other stakeholders to collect feedback for design incorporation.
  • Have flexibility with work assignments and may perform duties outside of traditional discipline work scope.
  • Work with multi-discipline teams on incorporation of SSNA design principles
  • Solve complex spatial integration issues while meeting system and overall ship requirements
  • Be able to effectively communicate with both internal leadership and external customer(s).
  • Be prepared to work in a collaborative and fast-paced environment.

  • Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience
  • Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience
  • Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.
  • Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • Specific knowledge of submarine propulsion plant design, with additional knowledge of CVN 68 Class and CVN 78 Class designs being a plus.
  • Direct technical expertise in propulsion plant fluid system design or component design including heat exchangers, valves, pumps, generators, and steam turbines.
  • Proficient in technical writing. You will be responsible for the deliverables associated with your system/component, and support the review of peer's deliverables.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, for providing frequent briefs to leadership at NNS and external parties.
  • Operational experience on commissioned or under-construction Navy vessels is a plus.
  • Experience with and the ability to develop relationships with Electric Boat and the supply base is critical for successful collaboration and project execution.
