About The Position

This role involves researching, planning, designing, and developing mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines, and mechanical, thermal hydraulic, or heat transfer systems for energy production, transmission, measurement, and use. The engineer will apply research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines. The Future Submarine Platform Mechanical team is actively seeking technically strong and motivated engineers to contribute to multiple submarine design programs. This position offers a unique opportunity to shape critical functions and novel capabilities for the next generation of fast attack submarines. The Future Submarine program supports SSN(X) and AUKUS attack submarine programs, as well as special projects in the Undersea Warfare program. The mechanical team is responsible for the concept design, development, and execution of complex mechanical systems in non-propulsion areas of submarines, including payload launch and recovery, control surfaces, HVAC, chill water, and masts. The successful candidate will collaborate with customers, vendors, and industry partners to develop these systems, contributing to the creation of the world's most advanced and capable submarines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience; Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience; Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.
  • Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • Strong technical background and knowledge of the engineering and design process related to mechanical systems from the concept stage through ship integration
  • Team facilitator and innovator, helping to develop and inspire creative solutions to challenging design goals
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to support the development and presentation of technical reports and briefs to NNS leadership or the customer, and coordinating with vendors and industry partners

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of submarine mechanical systems and how they interface with structural, electrical, and other mechanical systems
  • An understanding of an array of mechanical products, such as hydraulic and electric actuators, linkages/cam-sliders, pumps and valves, HVAC systems, structural weldments, welded or fastened joints, and others
  • Experience in traditional and computer-based methodologies for the design and analysis of components
  • The ability to work in and foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture within a diverse set of team members and stakeholders
  • Exhibit a desire for continuous learning and development in a dynamic environment
  • Operational experience on commissioned or under construction Navy vessels is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership for a mechanical system or over a team supporting a system
  • Develop innovative new design concepts considering functional requirements, future technological capabilities, operational needs, production capabilities, and lessons from legacy systems
  • Coordinate with customer counterparts and conduct periodic briefs to the customer and working groups
  • Develop and review technical calculations, reports, presentations and other products
  • Travel periodically to naval bases/facilities, vendors, conferences, or other NNS facilities
