This role is responsible for executing rigorous systems engineering processes to support the design, integration, and management of complex nuclear systems throughout their lifecycles. Working within established model-based systems engineering frameworks, this position ensures all system components work together effectively and meet project requirements. The Systems Engineer focuses on verifying and validating product requirements according to the systems engineering lifecycle process while maintaining clear documentation of design decisions and system interfaces.

  • Lead the execution of the core tasks and responsibilities listed in the Job Profile Task/Responsibilities section of this document, without close supervision and some latitude for independent judgment.
  • Provide feedback and guidance to more junior team members with the execution of the core tasks and responsibilities listed in the Job Profile Task/Responsibilities section of this document.
  • Lead small groups of engineers to solve complex technical problems and deliver high quality engineering work products on time and within budget.
  • Apply systems thinking and take a holistic approach to solve problems, analyze and design systems, considering the interdependencies and interactions between various components.
  • Lead and manage systems engineering lifecycle efforts surrounding: Stakeholder and operational analysis, Requirement identification, decomposition, and management, Functional decomposition and modeling, Logical system architecture development and modeling, Physical product definition, interface management, and change control, Design integration and testing, System verification and validation, Concept of operations development and modeling.
  • Develop and maintain system behavior models using model-based systems engineering (MBSE) tools within established Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) frameworks.
  • Lead the identification and monitoring of technical risks and the development of risk mitigation strategies.
  • Support value engineering activities including cost analyses, economic feasibility assessments, and cost reduction opportunity identification.
  • Write and review engineering documentation, reports, and communicate technical details and project progress to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Execute systems engineering processes within X-energy's quality management framework.
  • Work across engineering disciplines to ensure effective integration of system components and subsystems.
  • Perform work in accordance with X-energy quality assurance procedures to ensure engineering products meet required standards.
  • Always maintain professional demeanor and behavior in all forms of communication.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by manager.
  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial and systems engineering, or other engineering related discipline from an ABET accredited institution required.
  • Typically, ten years of experience in an engineering role.
  • A master’s degree in engineering or related field may be in lieu of two years of experience.
  • A Ph.D. in engineering or related field may be in lieu of three years of experience.
  • Previous experience at X-energy exceeding performance standards may be in lieu of years of experience.
  • Experience with systems engineering software tools.
  • Experience and/or knowledge in a minimum of one of the following areas: System Lifecycle Processes (ISO 15288), Operational & Stakeholder Analysis, Requirements Management, System Design & Interface Management, Design Integration & Testing, Verification & Validation, Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) Tools and Methods & Product Lifecycle Management Systems e.g. Teamcenter PLM, Cameo, Capella, Genesys, SysML, and DOORS.
