About The Position

The Engineer in Training position within the Lee County Department of Transportation (DOT) Traffic Team is designed for recent engineering graduates. This role focuses on traffic signal monitoring, timing, and operational evaluations of traffic signals and corridors. The position offers hands-on experience in traffic engineering, working closely with experienced staff to develop expertise in signal timing and general traffic engineering principles. The role also involves public interaction and coordination with various traffic signal owners in Lee County.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's Degree in engineering is required.
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam administered by NCEES.
  • A Class E Florida driver's license or a valid driver's license from another state, with the expectation of obtaining a Class E Florida driver's license within 30 days of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Candidates who have applied for or already obtained a Florida Engineer Intern (EI) certificate will be given preference.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize engineering and technical publications for conducting investigations and preparing reports.
  • Investigate timing complaints and make necessary adjustments.
  • Prepare engineering reports for proposed changes to traffic control devices or roadway geometries.
  • Receive and respond to citizen requests regarding traffic signals via phone or email.
  • Monitor traffic signals and signal systems to verify correct timing plans.
  • Review and retime signal systems as needed.
  • Conduct field reviews of signal systems.
  • Perform related work as assigned.
