The Geotechnical Engineering Unit collects and analyzes subsurface information and provides geotechnical engineering designs and recommendations for roadways and structures. The Geotechnical Engineering Unit (GEU) is looking for a Senior Investigations Professional in our Greenville Field Office. In this role you will: •Represent the GEU at technical and project meetings. •Develop requests for proposals and cost estimates for work performed by consultants. •Coordinate and execute subsurface investigations to characterize earth materials for geotechnical design and construction recommendations. •Interpret subsurface conditions and communicate their impact to the project design and overall schedule to the Project Manager and design team through verbal and written communication and reports. •Identify problematic soils that will likely require removal or remediation to ensure subgrade stability. •Identify locations of high groundwater and recommend subsurface drainage or geotextiles to improve subgrade stability. •Perform consultant oversight and management including the review and evaluation of consultant work •Provide technical guidance and serve as a subject matter expert for subsurface investigation methods and technologies to NCDOT staff and consultants working on NCDOT projects. You must be able to legally operate a State-owned motor vehicle to perform site visits in this role. May require registration as a Professional Engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of geotechnical engineering and geology related to investigations using drill rigs, cone penetration soundings, hand augers, in-situ sampling and testing, and laboratory testing.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop investigation scopes of work, manhour estimates, cost estimates, and schedules.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage geotechnical investigations, assign laboratory testing, report investigation results, and develop and write roadway recommendations related to subgrade stabilization, undercuts, handling of groundwater, and usage of materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to write RFP’s, negotiate consultant contracts, and manage consultants in the performance of geotechnical investigations and roadway recommendations.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide clear and concise verbal and written communication.
