The Roadway Design Unit is comprised of a diverse team whose primary purposes are to produce and review roadway design plans, lighting and electrical plans, and provide technical expertise on these subjects to internal and external partners. We are looking for an Engineer III who will serve on the Research, Standards & Innovation Team within the Specialty Functions Group. In this role you will: •Serve as an advanced level engineer on the Research, Standards, and Innovation Team to assist in the research of local, state, and national roadway design guidance and practices. •Analyze research, especially as it compares to current NCDOT design guidance and practices and assist in the development of technical reports conveying the findings of the research. •Assist the Team Lead with making recommendations to the Unit and Department leadership on updates to design guidance and practices and lead efforts to respond to roadway design related inquiries from internal and external customers. •Assist in coordination with Roadway Design staff, other technical disciplines, Divisions, and private engineering firms as a part of ongoing maintenance of roadway design guidance such as the Roadway Design Manual. •Develop roadway design plans and calculation of quantities, as needed. •Assist in the development of training materials on roadway design guidance and best practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of civil engineering principles (especially as it relates to highway design), AASHTO guidelines, NCDOT Roadway Design Manual, Bridge Policy, NCDOT Standard Drawings and Specifications, and NCDOT policies and procedures.
  • Experience using Bentley highway design software and workspaces (examples: MicroStation, Geopak, Open Roads Designer, Corridor Modeling).
  • Experience producing and/or reviewing engineered design plans and details to determine compliance and compatibility with construction and engineering principles and maintenance standards, codes, designs, and statutes.
  • Experience researching and coordinating with multidisciplinary staff on topics related to highway design, and effectively communicating technical information in a clear, concise and organized manner.
  • Experience facilitating meetings, creating guidance, setting project/team goals, and tracking progress of goals to ensure timely completion.
