About The Position

Mortenson is currently seeking a Engineer II or III - Substation Application to provide technical leadership and application-level engineering support for substation projects during pursuit, early design, estimating, and third-party review phases. This role bridges conceptual design and execution by developing preliminary substation designs, evaluating technical risks, supporting equipment selection, and advising project teams and clients on substation scope, constructability, and cost drivers. This position offers opportunities at both levels 2 and 3, allowing candidates to apply based on their experience and qualifications. Compensation for this role is determined based on factors such as experience and location.

Requirements

  • Understanding of discipline specific technical designs, QA/QC procedures, and engineering policies
  • Knowledge of engineering principles, business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements
  • Developing project management and analytical problem solving skills
  • Working knowledge of or are familiar with software packages: ASPEN, ETAP, PSSE, CDEGS, AutoCAD, Microstation, Primtech, etc
  • Active listening skills and effective communication including an openness to diverse input and feedback
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Microsoft Excel experience to track and analyze different components and combinations
  • Experience in the T&D industry, preference is given, and preferred, for design experience in the Energy Storage, Solar, Wind industry
  • Ability to travel up to 50%
  • Developing knowledge in system modeling, relay coordination studies, and development of associated protective relay settings (preferred)
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
  • 2+ years of experience in a similar role
  • EIT/FE (preferred)
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
  • 4+ years of experience in a similar role
  • Professional Engineering (PE) certification

Nice To Haves

  • Developing knowledge in system modeling, relay coordination studies, and development of associated protective relay settings (preferred)
  • EIT/FE (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Develop preliminary substation layouts, one-lines, and equipment concepts to support pursuits and estimating.
  • Apply broad knowledge of physical, P&C, grounding, insulation coordination, AC/DC systems, and equipment ratings.
  • Support equipment selection strategies in coordination with Supply Chain and discipline engineers.
  • Perform high-level technical reviews of third-party engineering packages.
  • Partner with estimating and project development teams to define engineering assumptions and risks.
  • Support development of technical narratives and proposal exhibits.
  • Provide input on constructability, modularization, and execution strategies.
  • Coordinate application-level engineering across physical, P&C, civil/structural, SCADA, and studies disciplines.
  • Serve as a technical liaison with clients, utilities, vendors, and external engineers.
  • Mentor junior engineers and interns in substation application engineering fundamentals.
  • Lead technical reviews and internal alignment for complex pursuits.
  • Contribute to standardization, lessons learned, and continuous improvement efforts.
