About The Position

The Hydraulics Unit provides hydrologic and hydraulic design recommendations and advice to all DOT personnel on surface drainage and stormwater quality matters that are required for the development of the department’s multi-modal projects during the stages of planning, design, permitting, construction and maintenance. The Unit also manages two statewide Federal compliance programs: National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) and National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and supports extreme event operations. The Hydraulics Unit is seeking a motivated Engineer I to serve as an entry-level design engineer responsible for assisting with the development of hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) studies, drainage designs, and field investigations in support of NCDOT transportation projects. This position involves a combination of office and field work and supports both project development and maintenance-related hydraulic needs. In this role, you will: •Assist senior engineers with drainage design and hydraulic review for transportation projects. •Perform drainage investigations requested by Divisions. •Support Division maintenance needs related to drainage infrastructure. •Assist with storm response and recovery engineering activities. •Will require travel to project and investigation sites across the state, including remote and mountainous locations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of fundamental hydrologic and hydraulic principles, including delineation of drainage areas, calculating watershed runoff, and basic pipe and culvert sizing.
  • Experience working with survey equipment and field data collection.
  • Experience in performing field work in varied and sometimes less-than-ideal weather and site conditions.
  • Familiarity with engineering and business software applications, including Microsoft Office, Microsoft SharePoint, ArcGIS, and CADD.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply engineering principles to real-world design and investigation situations and to make sound technical recommendations under the guidance of senior engineers.
