About The Position

System Protection Engineers are responsible for modeling, coordinating, and producing settings for the relays that operate both in-line and substation-based transmission and distribution protective devices. Engineers in System Protection are high sought after by workgroups throughout the Organization for technical input and support. Engineers in System Protection frequently coordinate with peer Engineers at surrounding utilities and with contractors representing interconnection customers. Protection Engineers also engage in research and development efforts to identify, test, and pilot new technologies. Other elements of the System Protection role include: Providing professional engineering service and support in the planning, construction, operation, maintenance, and analysis of PSE facilities and assets. Scheduling and coordinating major segments of complex projects to meet cost and time objectives. Reviewing designs and documentation to ensure compliance with PSE expectations. Interpreting and applying existing guidelines and engineering principles, practices, and theories toward the completion of assignments involving a substantial degree of complexity, with many interrelated elements requiring considerations not previously encountered. Supporting the continued development of PSE’s engineering workforce by sharing knowledge with others. Supporting emergency response operations when needed. Upholding the safety compliance standards inherent in PSE’s operating and/or field procedures related to work responsibilities. Promoting and supporting a culture of total safety. Ensuring duties are performed in accordance with all regulatory compliance obligations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in electrical, mechanical, civil or other appropriate engineering discipline.
  • Entry level to 3 years of experience in engineering design, preparation of specifications, technical field work, or system studies. Other prior non-engineering work experience may be considered for individuals at this level.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of or ability to acquire an EIT certificate.
  • Knowledge of engineering economics and analysis.
  • Experience in project cost estimating or scheduling.
  • Work or internship experience in utility engineering or related fields.

Responsibilities

  • Supports field crews and Relay Technicians during construction
  • Maintains compliance with NERC PRC standards
  • Performs root-cause analysis of transmission and distribution system events
  • Supports interconnection and integration of PSE and customer-owned generation including rotating machines, solar facilities, battery energy storage systems and wind farms
  • Interprets and/or modifies available guidelines for application to existing problems or processes.
  • Prepares complex designs, standards, studies and analyses.
  • Provides a detailed design review of internal or external technical documents.
  • Prepares cost estimates and project evaluations without direct supervision.
  • Plans and develops project budgets with appropriate documentation.
  • Ensures compliance with codes, standards, and design, operation, and maintenance requirements.
  • Identifies potential areas of weakness with assigned work, and initiate corrective action.
  • Documents and shares work with others to strengthen the depth and breadth of skills within PSE’s engineering workforce.
  • Communicates solutions to personnel possessing a wide variety of educational and employment backgrounds, including in public forums in both verbal and written forms.
  • Ensures that problem solutions are tailored to PSE’s business environment.
  • Supports emergency response work as requested including immediate and extended restoration efforts driven by weather and other system failures.
  • May lead or coordinate the work of junior engineers, engineering assistants, field technicians, and others who assist on specific projects. (This includes contractor/consultants.)
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
