PDG is seeking candidates for an Engineer position in the Highway Design Department. Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic highway engineering principles and techniques.
  • Written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experienced in common computer applications (e.g., MS Word, Excel), experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or OpenRoads Designer.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
  • 2 – 5 years of progressive experience in the field.
  • E.I.T. certification required.
  • A Valid Driver's License and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) is required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Highway Design Modeling Projects in NYC and throughout New York State.
  • Lead Highway Design Modeling Projects in all design stages I-VI.
  • Work directly with clients (NYCDDC, NYCDOT, NY Port Authority, NYSDOT, NYSTA, NYSPA, NYS Counties, NYS Town, NJDOT, MTA)
  • Designs Vertical and Horizontal Alignments using NYSDOT HDM and ASSHTO guidelines
  • Geometric Design – designs roadway elements such as lane widths, curves, grades, sight distance, and intersection to ensure safety and efficiency
  • Pavement Design – selects pavement materials and thickness (asphalt/concrete) based on expected loads, climate, and soil conditions.
  • Drainage Design – design system (ditches, storm sewers, culverts) to manage surface water and prevent flooding or erosion.
  • Earthwork and Grading – calculates cut and fill requirements and shapes the terrain to achieve the desired roadway profile.
  • Intersection and Interchange Design – Plans safe and efficient connections between roads, including signals, roundabouts, and ramps.
  • Roadside Safety Design – Incorporates guiderails, barriers, clear zones, and signage to enhance driver safety.
  • Work Zone Traffic Control – designs Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) and Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) plans, including lane closures, detours, signing, and pavement markings, while ensuring safety, mobility, and effective project phasing.
  • Independently prepares contract plans and specifications
  • Independently prepares construction cost estimates
  • Independently prepares Design Approval Documents and Engineering Reports
  • Develop proficiency in Highway Design Modeling (3D Highway/Roadway Models)
  • Performs occasional field visits to collect data and evaluate existing conditions
  • Performs occasional field visits to resolve construction issues
  • Effectively expresses thoughts and ideas both verbally and in writing in the English language
  • Understands highway safety requirements
