About The Position

This role is responsible to the assigned manager for performing entry level engineering work activities and projects requiring the application of engineering knowledge in a safe, effective, efficient and economic accomplishment of assigned objectives. The engineer will exhibit advanced level proficiency and specialized technical knowledge, serving as a company resource in areas such as system production, underground systems, extensive control systems, thermo-hydraulic control systems, distribution standards, fossil or nuclear plant operations. They will influence the direction of thinking throughout the organizational unit as a recognized authority in an area of expertise. The role involves leading, facilitating, and coordinating work activities of others within various organizational units and assuming the role of project or function manager for assigned tasks. The engineer will develop, recommend, and implement plans including scheduling, resource, and cost information to address complex engineering problems requiring multi-entity input. They will identify, clarify, resolve, and initiate solutions to complex problems involving multi-functional or organizational interfacing and multi-disciplined analytical techniques, while also developing opportunities and new ideas with system-wide impact. The position requires leading in the preparation and presentation of complex technical subjects clearly, concisely, and persuasively to senior management, professional organizations, and regulatory bodies, projecting credibility and competence. Interpersonal skills are crucial for building teams and networks across AEP, other companies, professional organizations, regulatory agencies, and academia. The role also involves making technical decisions based on calculated risks without management review, making decisions affecting long-range plans and goals based on uncertain input, visualizing long-term results, and making decisions with impact across organizational boundaries. Furthermore, the engineer will demonstrate vision in identifying business opportunities and understand how strategies and decisions impact customer and supplier relationships.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET along with two or more years of related engineering experience (for Engineer Grade 7)
  • Master's degree in engineering from an engineering program accredited by ABET (may be considered for entry into the organization at Grade 7)
  • 4 or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET (for Engineer Sr. Grade 08)
  • 2 years of related engineering experience along with a Master's degree or PhD in engineering from a program accredited by ABET (for Engineer Sr. Grade 08)
  • Acceptable alternative: a Bachelor's degree in engineering (non-ABET) plus a Master's degree or PhD in engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor's program

Nice To Haves

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico is encouraged and preferred (for Engineer Sr. Grade 08)

Responsibilities

  • Exhibits advanced level proficiency plus advanced knowledge of a specialized technical area that enables the engineer to serve as a resource for the company in an area such as system production, underground systems, extensive control systems, thermo-hydraulic control systems, distribution standards, fossil or nuclear plant operations, etc.

  • Identifies, clarifies, resolves, and initiates solutions to complex problems that require multi-functional, or organizational, interfacing and/or multi-disciplined analytical techniques.
  • Develops opportunities and new ideas and approaches that have system-wide impact.
  • Leads in the preparation and presentation of complex technical subjects, clearly, concisely, and persuasively, bringing in ancillary issues before senior management, professional organizations, regulatory bodies, etc.
  • Projects credibility and competence on technical issues and has highly developed presentation skills.
  • Builds teams and networks that extend through AEP, and other companies, professional organizations, regulatory agencies, and academia.
