About The Position

Researches, develops, designs, and tests electrical components, equipment, systems, and networks. Designs electrical equipment, facilities, components, products, and systems for commercial, industrial, and domestic purposes. This position is for an Electrical Engineer 1 and is intended for the Power Distribution Components group in Department E50 (formerly known as E70). The department supports the GERALD R. FORD Class Aircraft Carrier and is designated as the design agent for the propulsion plant. The incumbent will be responsible for designing and managing the Switchboards, Load Centers, and Transformers on Ford-class ships as well as providing assistance the overall electric plant system. As the Design Agent for this equipment, the selected candidate will be expected to become the subject matter expert and understand both the components and the systems associated with their equipment. This position regularly communicates with the Navy, Department Leads, Supply Chain, Vendors, NNL, Engineers/Designers across various Departments, Waterfront, and NAVSEA via email, phone, and in person meetings and utilizes letters, memos, and various other communication methods to formally document communications.

Requirements

  • Must Have Bachelor's Degree and 0 years of relevant exempt experience.
  • Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

  • Demonstrated the ability to come up to speed quickly on a new project and balance multiple tasks
  • Experience with military specifications such as MIL-S-901D, MIL-E-917E, MIL-S-16036K, and related documents.
  • Familiarity with IEEE standards related to metal-clad switchgear, high voltage VCBs, metal-enclosed low voltage switchgear, and similar.
  • Experience writing white papers and industry publications
  • Shipboard experience in operation and maintenance of Navy Systems
  • Strong technical experience with coordinating electrical engineering and design activities.
  • Experience with design/operations of electrical transmission, distribution, or generation.
  • Experience with High or Medium Voltage systems and components.
  • Experience with PLC programming and embedded systems software
