The Engineer, Computer IV (EC4) serves as a Cybersecurity Software Engineering Subject Matter Expert (SME) supporting secure software design, development, integration, and analytics for Naval Control Systems (NCS) and cybersecurity programs. This role bridges Operational Technology (OT) and Information Technology (IT) environments, enabling secure software engineering, automated DevSecOps pipelines, data-driven analytics, and advanced capabilities including High Performance Computing (HPC), Machine Learning (ML), and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The EC4 provides hands-on technical expertise to support modeling & simulation (M&S), cybersecurity risk assessments, system modernization, and mission readiness across both shipboard and laboratory environments.

  • Design, develop, and integrate secure software solutions for Control Systems (CS), shipboard systems, and cybersecurity toolsets.
  • Implement cybersecurity-by-design principles across code, algorithms, interfaces, and system components.
  • Develop data processing, automation, and analysis capabilities enabling enhanced system monitoring and risk detection.
  • Build and optimize CI/CD pipelines supporting automated testing, vulnerability scanning, and secure deployment workflows.
  • Integrate software into mixed OT/IT environments, ensuring compliance with DoD, Navy, and RMF cybersecurity requirements.
  • Support containerization, configuration management, and reproducible builds for NCS modernization.
  • Contribute to or lead development of HPC-enabled algorithms, data models, and analytics pipelines.
  • Develop or integrate ML/AI models supporting anomaly detection, predictive maintenance, and mission impact analysis.
  • Enable simulation-based analysis and modeling of cyber-physical systems to support mission readiness.
  • Collaborate with hardware, network, cybersecurity, and test teams to ensure seamless integration of software capabilities.
  • Analyze system architecture, data flows, and interfaces to validate cybersecurity controls and operational performance.
  • Support troubleshooting, debugging, and optimization of software deployed across distributed or embedded environments.
  • Develop technical documentation, test procedures, design artifacts, and engineering deliverables.
  • Support software testing events, evaluations, demonstrations, and verification/validation activities.
  • Provide subject-matter guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and cross-functional teammates.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering from an ABET-accredited program, OR Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Sciences, Artificial Intelligence, or Machine Learning
  • Five (5) years of experience integrating hardware and software using Agile and/or DevOps/DevSecOps in a professional or academic environment.
  • Proficiency in secure software development, algorithm design, and code integration within cyber-physical systems.
  • Experience with Agile/DevSecOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and secure deployments.
  • Familiarity with HPC environments, ML/AI workflows, and data-intensive computing.
  • Understanding of OT/IT integration, control systems, and cybersecurity hardening requirements.
  • Ability to work in multi-disciplinary technical teams and solve complex engineering and cybersecurity challenges.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills supporting technical reviews, design artifacts, and engineering reports.
  • U.S. Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance.
  • At least one (1) year of experience developing HPC code, Machine Learning models, or AI algorithms.
  • SmartBenefits through the Washington Metro Area Transportation Authority, where you specify an amount of your pre-tax wages be paid directly to your SmarTrip account.
