About The Position

This position will provide continuing experience in, and development of practical application of professional engineering processes, laws, principles, and techniques related to highway engineering. Under the supervision of a Licensed Professional Engineer, this position will apply and implement engineering theories, principles, and standards. Perform inspections, on a statewide basis, evaluating and documenting each bridge's capacity to carry traffic, and condition of the structural elements and the adequacy of the bridge opening to accommodate flow of water and/or traffic. This position uses existing guidelines and/or guidance from a PE to determine and recommend appropriate action to be taken based on the inspection findings such as closing unsafe bridges, repairs and/or maintenance.

Requirements

  • Current enrollment as an Engineer Intern by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors.
  • One (1) year of engineering experience related to structural engineering, transportation or bridge inspection.

  • Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position.
  • Depth and breadth of bridge inspection experience.
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint), SAP, Google, SharePoint.
  • Strong mathematical skills and attention to technical detail.

Responsibilities

  • Inspection Preparation: Organize structure folders, determine inspection sequence, prepare for special inspection requirements, and anticipate traffic control procedures.
  • Conduct bridge inspection by observing all bridge components for proper function and identifying defects.
  • Determine appropriate condition states for bridge elements and estimate quantities for each condition state.
  • Evaluate adequacy of the bridge opening to accommodate flow of water and/or traffic.
  • Document inspection findings by taking photos, completing reports, and drawing informative sketches.
  • Assist in inspecting and maintaining Below Bridge Access Vehicles (BBAV).
  • Provide training to inspectors on policies and/or procedures.
  • Assist in the development of policies and/or procedures for bridge inspectors.
