About The Position

While candidate will be assigned to a specific Engineering Program, it is expected that they will devote a significant portion of their time providing guidance and oversight for unique/complex problems across all Programs. Problem Solving:Candidate will apply sound technical principles and advanced knowledge to address unique or complex issues across all programs.  Resolution of these issues may require development of unique analytical approaches and/or laboratory or shipboard testing. Discretion/Latitude:Virtually self-supervisory with the necessary leadership skills to coordinate the activities of multiple organizations in the resolution of complex or unique issues.  Determines and pursues courses of action necessary to obtain desired results, work checked through consultation and agreement with others rather than by formal review of superior.  Plans R&D programs and recommends technological application initiatives to accomplish long-range objectives for their engineering discipline. Impact:Serves as a technological expert guiding the resolution to complex or unique problems, minimizing the impact to ship design or construction.  Develops advanced technological ideas and guides their development into the production environment.  Researches and develops new applications resulting in new product/business opportunities for the company. Liaison:Serves as a Company technical authority on issues affecting the design and construction of fluid systems.  Acts as a key technical advisor to management and may serve as the spokesperson when interfacing with the Customer on key technical issues.  Will serve as a Company representative on related technical committees and at technical conferences.  May serve a consultant to top management in long-range company planning concerning new or projected areas of technological research and advancements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 14 years of relevant exempt experience
  • Master’s Degree and 12 years of relevant professional experience
  • Ph.D. and 9 years of experience.
  • Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice To Haves

  • Serves as a Company expert in the design and analysis of fluid systems and related components.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of pipe stress and general stress analysis is required.
  • Candidate must have experience and knowledge of pipe and pipe component stress analysis and pressure vessel analysis including flange, gasket, and bolting analysis.
  • The candidate must have a working knowledge of pipe flexibility analysis using the Naval and commercial piping codes and the ability to evaluate the piping configuration sustained and cyclic stresses against allowable stress, and recommend changes when necessary.
  • Knowledge and capability should allow for component stress analysis as well as overall system assessments and evaluation of defects.
  • They also must be capable of understanding the impact that design/modifications have on performance of ship systems.
  • Candidate must have a thorough knowledge of the pipe flexibility analysis methods provided in the Naval Shipboard Piping Structural Design Manual, B-31.1, B-31.3, or similarly recognized pipe flexibility guidance documents.
  • The candidate must also be familiar with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Sections 2D, III, and VIII, and be capable of applying the guidance documents for defect analysis; such as FFS-1, PCC-1, and PCC-2.
  • In addition, they must have experience with Triflex and be capable of leading the validation of software upgrades using the designated Triflex Subject Matter Experts, as needed.
  • A basic understanding and experience in using PIPE IV, or the ability to gain this knowledge is desired.
  • Capability to perform or ability to learn to perform, Finite Element Analysis using Abaqus or other available software is preferred.
  • The candidate will serve to validate and manage any in-house developed software that is available for general use within NNS.
  • It is desirable for the candidate to be familiar with test methods and equipment to develop plans for laboratory or shipboard tests.
  • It is preferred that the candidate have piping system experience in design, construction, repair and overhaul of ships.
  • Candidate must be able to apply general stress analysis knowledge to provide a technically sound approach for unique or complex problems.
  • Candidate will serve as a Company's representative in this subject area and must have superior written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to provide clear explanations to other NNS engineers, non-engineers, and SUPSHIPNN.
  • They will participate in identifying and developing individuals who could serves as a successor to this position.
  • They will act as a consultant to other engineers in resolving piping stress issues and focus on mentoring junior engineers.
  • Candidate should be capable of determining requirements and limits for piping systems using ship specifications and diagrams for shipboard systems or applying commercial standards for non-shipboard piping systems.
  • Candidate must have significant relevant experience.
  • An advanced degree in Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering and a valid Professional Engineer's license is preferred.
