The Engineer position at the University of Hawaii at Manoa involves providing mechanical engineering services and technical assistance in the operation and maintenance of all facilities. The role includes gathering information and data in the field, investigating problems, and providing evaluations and solutions to various mechanical systems. The engineer will consult and maintain close liaison with private engineering consultants, public utilities, and contract specialists to address serious difficulties and related issues. Responsibilities also include inspecting repair, maintenance, and renovation projects to ensure compliance with engineering plans and specifications, monitoring construction progress, enforcing materials quality assurance standards, and preparing bid documents and project schedules. The engineer will also respond to emergency situations related to mechanical systems and may be required to perform duties outside of standard business hours.

  • Provide mechanical engineering services and technical assistance in the operation and maintenance of all facilities.
  • Consult and maintain close liaison with private engineering consultants, public utilities, and contract specialists.
  • Inspect repair, maintenance, and renovation projects under construction.
  • Monitor construction progress to assure timely completion of all projects.
  • Enforce materials quality assurance standards and ensure on-site compliance.
  • Review and approve submittals, substitution requests, shop drawings, and as-built drawings.
  • Responsible for the authoritative staff review of mechanical engineering plans and specifications.
  • Prepare repair and maintenance bid documents, project schedules, and cost estimates.
  • Monitor and assure all building and campus systems are operating properly and efficiently.
  • Provide response and assessment to emergency situations related to mechanical systems.
  • Perform duties outside of standard business hours as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Engineering or related field.
  • 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience in physical plant operations of building systems.
  • Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques in physical plant operations.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and theories related to building systems.
  • Ability to resolve complex problems using creative reasoning and logic.
  • Ability to interpret and present information clearly in writing and verbally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
  • Considerable working knowledge of energy management control systems/building automation systems.
  • Knowledge of equipment functions in building systems such as chilled water loops and emergency generators.
  • Knowledge of construction inspection and building construction materials.
  • Ability to prepare and review construction cost estimates and specifications.
  • Ability to integrate and coordinate various construction activities.
