About The Position

The Engine Squad Leader (AFEO) position with the Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, involves full performance duties at the GS-06 level. The role includes making initial evaluations of fire situations, determining the rate of spread, potential hazards, and appropriate suppression methods. The leader will personally perform and direct others in starting pump engines, adjusting engine speeds, laying hoses, and using nozzles effectively. Daily leadership is required, including instructing crew members, distributing work assignments, and ensuring timely task completion. The position also involves performing hazardous fuel reduction projects, road and trail maintenance, and operating specialized equipment for wildland and prescribed fire situations. The leader will assist in preparing hazardous fuels treatment and burn plans and participate in wildland fire safety training.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service or exempt.
  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
  • Successful completion of one-year probationary period.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • This is a drug testing designated position.
  • Must pass the Work Capacity Test for certain Interagency Fire Program Management positions.
  • Willing to live/work in remote locations.
  • Under age 37 or eligible for a waiver if older.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a skilled wildland firefighter on an organized crew.
  • Completion of the Primary NWCG Core Requirement of Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1).
  • Completion of the NWCG Course # S-290 Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior.

Responsibilities
