About The Position

The Engine Crew Module Lead (SO) is responsible for assisting the Fire Management Officer (FMO) in coordinating the activities of the County Type 6 wildland fire engine and crew. The Engine Module Lead supervises the engine crew in day-to-day tasks, risk mitigation project work, wildfire response operations and maintains safety first as the foundation for all aspects of wildland fire management activities. Directs and supervises the engine crew in performing a variety of wildfire suppression, risk mitigation and other fire management duties. The Engine Crew Module Lead may personally engage in fighting forest, range, and other wildland fires and participating in prescribed fire operations. Requirements

• National Wildland Fire Coordinating Group (NWCG)- ENGB, ICT5, FAL2
• Ability to pass The Work Capacity Test (WCT-Pack Test) as a method for assessing an employee's fitness levels for fire qualifications.
• Arduous fitness (WCT-Pack Test) will consist of completing a three-mile hike, within 45 minutes, while carrying a 45-pound pack.
• Required within one year of hire FEMA coursework including ICS-100, IS-700 JCSO’s Emergency Vehicle Operations Course, First Aid/CPR/AED/TCCC
• Required within three years of hire: ICT4
• GED, High School Diploma
• Minimum three years Work Experience

• Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
• Heavy equipment operator experience

Responsibilities

• Directs and supervises the engine crew in performing a variety of wildfire suppression, risk mitigation and other fire management duties.
• May personally engage in fighting forest, range, and other wildland fires and participating in prescribed fire operations.
• Directs and supervises moderately complex fuels management projects and participates in more complex projects that may include gathering data for monitoring programs and implementing prescribed fire, and mechanical and biological treatments, inventorying fuel beds, and piling vegetation debris.
• Drives and operates a wildland fire engine, positioning the engine for proper use and operation, and coordinates module or crew logistics and places caches of equipment and supplies at strategic points.
• Performs/conducts engine operations techniques, including tandem operations, mobile attack, pump and roll, firing and holding operations, stationary attack, engine protection, simple and progressive hose lays.
• Ensures pump tests and daily engine preventative maintenance equipment checks are completed; and that the engine is kept in a full state of readiness for emergency fire dispatch.
• Ensures adequate supply of water and chemical agents are maintained to the fire, particularly on critical areas of the fire line; and locates water sources and checks for volume and cleanliness for engine resupply.
• Hiking on rigorous terrain to establish project perimeters, marking trees and locating access points.
• Using chainsaws, log chokers, chains, ropes and a variety of hand tools to conduct fuels management operations.
• Moving, maintaining and troubleshooting machinery including, but not limited to skid steer, woodchipper and various equipment attachments .
• Oversees sawyers, and other laborers during fuels projects, maintenance of equipment.
• Conducting Type 3 prescribed fire operations.
• May be required to operate light vehicles, 4X4's, UTV’s and heavy equipment.
• Provides education and interacts with community organizers and neighbors to explain the effects of fuels projects.
• Hiking on rigorous terrain to scout fires, safety zones, escape routes, hazards and establish fire line locations.
• Using chainsaws, hand tools for establishing control lines.
• Identifying resources needs to accomplish incident objectives.
• Driving, inspecting, maintaining and troubleshooting vehicles and heavy equipment.
• Inspecting, using and maintaining water pumps for use in suppression.
• Performing firing and burnout operations under supervision.
• Incident management at the Type 4 level.
• Provides tactical directions on attacking, controlling, or mopping up fires, building or patrolling fire lines, cleaning up burned areas within fire lines, and suppressing spot fires.
• Coordinates with the Fire Management Officers to establish benchmarks and performance objectives for the crew.
• Reviews Geospatial Data in preparation for on-site layout.
• Schedules work sites based on priorities, including time, weather issues, and site access.
• Leads the development and implementation of training programs including fire management classes, equipment use and maintenance classes, general safety classes and other agency required training.
• Creates daily briefings on fire conditions and current fire activity.
• Maintains records and provides updates on current projects.
• Reviews and presents after action reports to leadership, utilizes reports to create training programs and inform future operations.
• Plans and maintains a budget for crew operations and project work including credit card purchases, travel, training and other related items.
• Supervises staff in area of responsibility.
• Administers and makes recommendations for routine personnel matters affecting subordinates, including recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training, assigning, scheduling, granting leave, appraisals, and taking corrective action.
• Conducts performance evaluations and communicates short- and long-term goals and objectives.
• Submits personnel records and reports as required by the county.
• Assists and advises subordinates as necessary, resolves problems as non-routine situations arise, and ensures adherence to established policies, procedures, and standards.
• Communicates changes in policy and procedures to direct reports and implements them as directed.
• Other duties as assigned.
• The incumbent must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, etc. as necessary.
• Work may include all hazard and emergency response activities.
