About The Position

Provide technical support to assigned engineering program area. To assist with geotechnical drilling operations, which includes gathering geotechnical, geophysical and non-destructive subsurface investigation data through the use of mechanical drilling and other equipment to be used in preliminary engineering design, forensic investigations and assessments of recent and on-going construction activities. How you will contribute: Communication: Communicate with VDOT support staff as well as external contacts and consultants. Proactively resolve issues at the lowest level. Project a positive VDOT image. Keep supervisor advised of important development and field observations. Contract Administration: Assist in monitoring contract drilling operations. Observe contract drilling for compliance with industry standards, including testing procedures, utility clearance, and borehole logging. Create and maintain boring logs in parallel with contract driller's logs. Keep records of contract drilling activities for comparison to invoiced production totals. Drilling and Sampling: Assist with drilling and core sampling of soils and rock. Assist with establishing safe and effective drilling sites including clearing, benching, and leveling operations. Assist in operating drilling and support vehicles and equipment on all types of terrain and in all weather conditions. Engineering Technology: Apply principles and practices of engineering technology to assigned program areas. Interpret policies and procedures and apply in daily work assignments. Equipment Operation and Maintenance: Assist in the operation and maintenance of all drilling equipment, support vehicles, and tooling required by the work. Duties include, but are not limited to, operation of equipment (with supervision), handling of all drilling tools (augers, rods, heads, etc.), and resupply, deliver of all tools required for successful field operations. Assist with the day-to-day maintenance of the drilling equipment and support vehicles. Project Documentation: Prepare and maintain daily documentation of project activities. Ensure documentation is submitted and is completed. Avoid project delays and solve project related matters. Recordkeeping: Maintains accurate records for all project activities. Enters and uupdates data to meet required deadlines and requirements. Interprets and applies relevant policies and procedures. Technical Support: Assist with locating job sites, interpreting plans, establishing boring locations, and conducting preliminary site surveys. Help to perform soil survey and major and minor structure investigations by assisting with utility locate coordination and land owner contact. Produce clear and concise boring logs with complete and accurate descriptions of subsurface conditions as encountered. Follow current protocols for field measurements and description techniques and nomenclature. Collect, log, and store field samples for transport to the drill shop and from the drill shop into long-term storage or to laboratories for further testing. Accurately measure and record groundwater levels and ensure that moisture contents are measured and recorded on the boring logs.

Requirements

  • Ability to identify soils and rock in accordance with recognized classification systems (USCS).
  • Ability to learn local geology, and subsurface investigation practices, pavement investigations, soils, bedrock, materials properties, materials testing, sampling and VDOT specifications.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required certifications within 12 months of employment.
  • Ability to operate, maintain geotechnical drilling equipment, associated tools, and accessories.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to read, interpret engineering plans and specifications.
  • Ability to record field data, prepare reports, and perform mathematical calculations.
  • Safety shoes required.
  • Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
  • Skill in with operating and maintaining mechanical construction equipment.
  • Valid driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • A combination of training, experience or education in Engineering Technology or related field desired.
  • Experience identifying soil and rock in accordance with recognized classification systems (USCS).
  • Experience in operating and maintaining mechanical equipment, particularly drilling equipment and associated tools and accessories.
  • Experience in reading and interpreting engineering plans and specifications.
  • Experience in recording field data, preparing reports, and performing mathematical computations.
  • Experience in the use of computers and software applications.

  • Experience with performing heavy manual labor in all weather conditions.
  • Possession of Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Possession of required materials certifications, flagger certification, traffic control technician (TCT), 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification, First Aid, CPR, and Chain Saw Safety.
