About The Position

We are looking for talented individuals passionate about making an impact in the company and the community, and who are interested in the dynamic energy industry. This role supports Wholesale Energy Sales and Purchases and offers the opportunity to deepen accounting and utility knowledge while working closely with both operational and corporate accounting teams. The position involves working with complex financial and operational data, serving as a key bridge between operations and accounting/financial reporting. The Energy Settlements group is responsible for accurate accounting, settlement, and reporting of wholesale energy transactions, ensuring alignment between operations activity, financial records, and regulatory requirements. This includes overseeing AP/AR functions, daily market performance analysis, and regulatory reporting. The department acts as a critical link between operating areas within UNS Energy and the Finance and Accounting functions to translate operational data into meaningful financial data.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (BS/BA) or Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of related experience (for Analyst II), 5 years (for Senior Analyst), or 9 years (for Lead Analyst), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Accounting experience.
  • Understanding of or exposure to: Journal entry preparation and account reconciliations.
  • Understanding of or exposure to: Financial statements and regulatory reporting.
  • Understanding of or exposure to: Wholesale energy settlements or market operations.
  • Experience with financial systems, reporting tools, or utility energy platforms.
  • Strong analytical skills with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Curiosity and desire to understand how operational data flows through to accounting and reporting.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across functions.
  • A proven team-oriented mindset and accountability for results.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality for all matters regarding highly sensitive corporate and outside party information.
  • Understanding and observance of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s Code of Conduct.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify issues by looking at settlement data and solve complex problems in the electric utility industry.

Responsibilities

  • Account for wholesale energy purchases and sales, including validation of volumes and pricing.
  • Prepare, analyze, and review journal entries related to wholesale energy transactions and ensure accurate posting to the General Ledger.
  • Participate in the financial month-end close process, ensuring timely and accurate recording of wholesale energy transactions and supporting schedules.
  • Identify data irregularities and coordinate timely resolution to meet financial month-end close and reporting deadlines.
  • Perform financial statement analysis and reconcile settlement activity to accounting records.
  • Support and prepare Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) reporting, including validation of applicable FERC pages and supporting schedules.
  • Utilize Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE) and other reporting tools to analyze transaction data, research variances, and support internal and external reporting.
  • Support energy trading system to General Ledger integrations, including data exports/imports and reconciliation of system outputs.
  • Collaborate closely with Wholesale Power Marketing, other operational teams, Corporate Accounting, Plant Accounting, and External Reporting teams.
  • Prepare ad hoc and recurring reports for internal management, auditors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Evaluate and apply contract terms related to billing, settlement, and revenue recognition.
  • Identify and recommend process improvements to strengthen controls, data integrity, and efficiency in IT systems and work processes.
  • Maintain an active awareness of utility activities, accounting guidance, and regulatory requirements impacting wholesale energy transactions.
  • Oversee the AP/AR function for wholesale energy transactions and ensure timely payments, tracking receivables.
  • Analyze market performance daily and interpret market data to create reports.
  • Monetize and track transactions.
  • Serve as the subject-matter expert for all settlements functions within the energy market.
  • Develop and demonstrate a thorough understanding of the rules and regulations for ACC, FERC, DOE, SEC, and Market Operators, including rate making requirements.
  • Evaluate new rules and regulations affecting energy transactions and participate in their implementation.
  • Oversee and lead multiple complex projects, assisting others and delivering projects to successful completion.
  • Perform complex research, analysis, and compliance, including GAAP research.
  • Provide research and analysis related to the feasibility and cost/benefit of different contracts and strategies.
  • Interact with departments throughout the organization on billing, accounting, and reporting issues.
  • Assist with implementation of improvements or modifications to Energy Settlements systems and procedures.
  • Take ownership of data, identify, draft, and implement validation methodology to ensure data accuracy.
  • Coordinate and expedite resolution to problems.
  • Ensure market sub-allocations are correctly billed to customers and file/track billing disputes.
  • Participate with internal and external legal counsel and consultants to interpret contract provisions and pricing, including modeling billing options.
  • Apply extensive knowledge to handle complex tasks and provide guidance to others.
  • Participate in the development or revision of internal control procedures.
  • Review and sign-off of work of other analysts and completed projects.
  • Ensure resources are available and channeled to produce planned deliverables on time, including assignments of team members.
  • Act as a source for training for other analysts.
  • Work with Metering Department to resolve issues with meter data.
  • Act as point person for day-to-day activity in energy markets.
  • Manage market sub-allocation process and suggest changes to maximize market potential.
  • Collaborate with and provide analysis and reporting to leadership.
  • If supervisory, ensure that the Company’s management principles, policies, and programs are consistently practiced and continually support the Affirmative Action Plan.
