Scope: The Massachusetts Chapter represents over 20,000 Sierra Club members in the state and runs programs related to conservation, transportation, climate, energy, toxic chemicals, plastics, and more. We run statewide coalitions, advocate for state and local policies, and endorse candidates for office that align with our organizations policy goals and values to protect, preserve, and enjoy nature. Under the direction of the Chapter Director and Deputy Director, the Energy Organizer plans and implements several programs within the chapter while building chapter capacity. They will grow volunteer leadership and programmatic work by supporting volunteers, building partner and community-based contacts, and furthering programmatic advocacy.

Requirements

Grassroots organizing: Experience or skills in developing leaders, leading groups, social movement building, and community engagement.
Collaborative abilities: Demonstrated ability to work with others, especially across different identities and roles.
Coordination experience: Experience coordinating multiple programs simultaneously with limited oversight.
Strong written and oral communication skills: Ability to communicate clearly and concisely across different groups of stakeholders, internally and externally.
Self-awareness of group identities and how they have shaped your life and experiences at work. You have an analysis of how racism, classism, and other forms of oppression in society impact relationships, systems, and culture. You bring experience and skills for working effectively with colleagues across group identities and position/role.

Program knowledge: Experience and knowledge in various program areas of work within the chapter, such as but not limited to conservation, climate, and energy.
Independence: Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision. Ability to customarily and regularly exercise discretion and independent judgment.
Lobbying & Government Relations: Experience either lobbying or representing elected or appointed office at any level of government is highly desirable.
Public Speaking: Experience and ability to lead trainings, give speeches and presentations, and speaking to media outlets on behalf of an organization or community group.

Responsibilities

Advancing Sierra Club Climate Justice Mission Actively seeks opportunities to advance the Sierra Club's commitment to equity, inclusion, diversity, and justice through equitable internal processes, centering equity in campaign work, and communications with members, supporters, and partners.
Capacity building Recruits, trains, informs, and motivates volunteers to engage in efforts to achieve programmatic and advocacy goals. Organizes events, presentations, trainings, rallies, and meetings in support of programmatic and advocacy goals. Develops volunteer leaders who are able to strategize, organize, inspire, and motivate others. Supports other Sierra Club educational and base-building programs as needed.
Programmatic strategy and implementation Plans, develops, coordinates, and implements campaigns for various programs and projects in collaboration with the State Director, other staff, and volunteers. Coordinates and measures the success of these campaigns with the State Director and volunteer leads to ensure progress towards meeting the campaign's goals. Oversees and supports program-related volunteer advocacy teams. Oversees research to support programs, including identifying appropriate resources, fact-checking, and supporting the creation of educational materials, presentations, and written comments. Represents the Chapter to external partners and serves as the Chapter point of contact for various partners, networks, and coalitions. Develops strategic relationships with new organizations that share common goals and values. Coordinates program activities with other Chapter activities and national programs as necessary. Supports communications by planning and drafting internal and external communications that support the programmatic goals. Produces written reports for funders as needed.
Programmatic advocacy Recruits and supports Sierra Club members and supporters to participate in direct advocacy related to program goals. Lobbies and represents the Chapter to elected officials in designated program areas. Coordinates with Chapter leaders to prepare and present advocacy materials and positions in public and private meetings. Delegates advocacy responsibilities to volunteers as appropriate. Ensures public representation of Sierra Club in priority local and state processes related to programmatic goals, including forums as needed.
Miscellaneous Participates in Chapter Fundraising events. Works with staff leadership and volunteer leaders to support grant reporting, major gifts, and small gifts work. Performs other Chapter work as needed, including, but not limited to facilitating volunteer orientations, attending and leading presentations at chapter meetings, and authoring articles for monthly or annual newsletters. Supports equity and justice efforts, including building relationships with partner organizations and growing volunteer engagement in equity and justice campaigns.
