About The Position

TRC is seeking a Project Engineer II to support commercial energy efficiency and green building programs in Oregon. Projects and responsibilities may include peer review of energy efficiency calculations and building energy simulation models, site visits to identify potential energy efficiency measures, technical and financial analysis for new and existing energy efficiency measures, and developing energy efficiency measure calculations. Candidates must possess strong technical capabilities including knowledge of building systems, energy efficiency, knowledge of energy-related codes and standards. The desired candidate will work collaboratively with program staff and clients to promote energy efficiency and green building projects. The candidate will be presented with a diverse range of projects found in commercial energy systems. This position requires flexibility; diversity of technical expertise; strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; and excellent customer care skills. The candidate will rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.

Requirements

  • Bachelors or master's degree in mechanical engineering, or similar program such as Oregon State University's Energy Systems Engineering Degree or Oregon Institute of Technology's Renewable Energy Engineering Degree
  • 3+ years of experience within the energy efficiency, green building, building science, or related fields
  • Experience with analytical requirements for commercial HVAC, central heating and cooling plants, and HVAC controls upgrades
  • Proficiency with Trane TRACE 3D Plus and eQuest simulation modeling software
  • Well-developed analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, time management and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Team player with ability to work in a fast-paced environment

  • Energy efficiency projects involving natural gas savings
  • Energy efficiency program market in the Pacific Northwest
  • Data analytics experience using R or Python programming
  • Additional energy modeling software packages (EnergyPlus, IES VE)
  • Energy auditing and retrocommissioning
  • Well-developed presentation/public speaking skills
  • Use of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) technologies
  • PE, CEM or LEED AP accreditation

Responsibilities

  • Review energy efficiency simulation models and spreadsheet calculations developed by third-party contractors to assess accuracy and compliance with program requirements
  • Communicate with third-party contractors to resolve any issues identified in project reviews
  • Conduct assessments on commercial and multifamily buildings to characterize opportunities for energy efficiency
  • Conduct site visits to verify installation and operation of baseline and replacement energy-using equipment
  • Develop data analysis to determine savings from custom energy efficiency projects
  • Keep managers aware of project schedules and progress and provide regular time charging/budget updates as requested
  • Communicate with contractors and program administrators regarding program requirements
  • Stay informed about energy issues and industry trends through regular technical reading and participation in local and national professional organizations
