About The Position

The Energy Data Analyst Intern will support Harvard Business School’s energy management program and Facilities department by advancing data-driven decision-making across campus operations. This role focuses on developing and enhancing business intelligence (BI) tools, improving data infrastructure, and contributing to energy and water performance optimization initiatives. The intern will work at the intersection of analytics, facilities operations, and sustainability, delivering actionable insights through dashboard development, workflow automation, and performance analysis, while gaining hands-on exposure to university campus energy management, facilities operations, skilled trades workflows, and broader campus infrastructure systems.

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in bachelor’s degree or master’s degree program in data science; engineering; energy management; environmental science; sustainability; or other related fields.
  • Strong analytical and technical data skills and ability to work with large data sets.
  • Experience working with BI and data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, or similar); familiarity with APIs or data integration methods preferred.
  • Experience in energy efficiency engineering within commercial or industrial buildings.
  • Experience optimizing building energy systems through utilization of Energy Management Systems, energy audits and data analysis.
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Attention to detail is a must.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) certification and/or state certification as an Engineer in Training (EIT).
  • Advanced understanding of MS Excel, or other information database collection and visualization technologies.
  • Familiarity with fault detection and diagnostics programs.
  • Familiarity with State Energy Codes and/or ASHRAE 90.1.
  • Knowledge of renewable/alternative energy technologies.
  • Exposure to building systems (HVAC, electrical, water systems) or energy management concepts.
  • Experience with metadata management, data governance, or data quality improvement.
