The Energy & Sustainability Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing sustainability initiatives, energy management strategies, and carbon‑reduction programs across the facilities portfolio. This role leads efforts to optimize building performance, reduce consumption, maintain regulatory compliance, and support corporate ESG objectives. In addition to leading sustainability programs, this position also oversees several key mechanical and life‑safety systems, including EV charger infrastructure, mechanical preventive maintenance, and Fire Life Safety Systems (FLSS), as described in the attached job duties.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of sustainability best practices, energy management, carbon reporting, renewable energy, and building performance optimization.
  • Technical understanding of mechanical systems (HVAC, boilers, chillers, pumps, etc.) and preventive maintenance programs.
  • Familiarity with fire life safety systems, testing requirements, and compliance frameworks.
  • Experience analyzing utility data and using energy management platforms (e.g., EnergyCAP, Lucid, Urjanet, PowerBI).
  • Ability to manage vendors, contractors, and cross‑functional project teams.
  • Strong analytical, reporting, and communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Environmental Science, Sustainability, or related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with EV charging infrastructure and load management tools.
  • Knowledge of sustainability frameworks such as LEED, WELL, ISO 50001, ENERGY STAR.
  • Familiarity with CMMS, BMS, SCADA, and other building management or maintenance systems.
  • Professional certifications preferred: CEM (Certified Energy Manager), LEED AP, ENV-SP, or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement enterprise‑wide energy and sustainability strategies aligned with corporate carbon‑reduction goals.
  • Identify energy‑saving opportunities and lead implementation for HVAC, mechanical systems, lighting, controls, and other major loads.
  • Track, analyze, and report energy consumption, utility costs, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, water usage, and waste diversion metrics.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives to reduce energy intensity and improve operational efficiency.
  • Drive sustainability certifications (e.g., LEED, ENERGY STAR, TRUE Zero Waste) where applicable.
  • Partner with internal Workplace Manager(s) on cross‑functional sustainability projects and initiatives.
  • Lead preventive maintenance programs for all major mechanical systems and ensure execution of 100% PM compliance goals.
  • Act as the technical advisor for mechanical system optimization, reliability improvements, and lifecycle planning.
  • Oversee vendor performance for mechanical systems, ensure adherence to SOPs, monitor repairs, and ensure system uptime.
  • Support planning, budgeting, and prioritization of mechanical upgrades tied to sustainability goals, efficiency improvements, or compliance drivers.
  • Oversee operation, maintenance, and performance of all EV chargers across the portfolio.
  • Ensure EV charging systems maintain 95% uptime and meet 100% safety compliance, as required.
  • Partner with vendors to optimize load management, charging efficiency, demand response, and reporting tools.
  • Support expansion planning, infrastructure upgrades, and usage reporting for workplace charging programs.
  • Manage the maintenance, testing, and compliance of Fire Life Safety Systems (FLSS).
  • Ensure all FLSS meet 100% compliance with regulatory standards and remain fully operational.
  • Coordinate inspections, repairs, documentation, and system upgrades between vendors and internal teams.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal environmental and energy standards.
  • Maintain compliance for mechanical systems and fire life safety systems per regulatory requirements.
  • Support sustainability compliance reporting such as CARB, Title 24 benchmarking, waste reporting, or ESG disclosures.
  • Identify, scope, and prioritize energy‑efficiency projects with ROI and lifecycle cost justification.
  • Manage budgets related to energy programs, mechanical maintenance, and sustainability projects.
  • Track utility rebates, grants, and incentives for energy and water efficiency projects.
  • Develop sustainability communications, building occupant engagement programs, and awareness campaigns.
  • Train internal teams and technicians on new sustainability programs, mechanical systems, or operational best practices.
  • Provide dashboards, metrics, and presentations to leadership regarding energy performance and sustainability progress.
