The University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD) welcomes applications and nominations for the position of inaugural Dr. Karen J. Ivers Endowed Professorship in Biomaterial and Regenerative Dental Medicine. UMSOD is seeking a tenure-track associate or full professor in the field of dental biomaterials and regenerative medicine to advance the school’s research status, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and develop new external partnerships. This distinguished position requires an eminent research scientist, who will work with colleagues in the department, School, and across the university to obtain funding, teach and train students, advance science, and provide innovative solutions and translational discoveries to enhance patient care throughout the State of Maryland. Advancing scientific discovery is a vital part of the mission of UMSOD. The School supports transdisciplinary research programs in dental, oral, and craniofacial health, spanning both basic and clinical sciences. UMSOD has consistently ranked among the top 10 U.S. dental schools in NIH funding since 2010, reaching as high as No. 4 in 2020 (Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research). Research at UMSOD is strengthened through close collaboration with colleagues across the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) campus, including the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy, as well as with the University of Maryland, College Park in engineering and computer science. UMSOD investigators also partner with leading federal research institutions such as the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and maintain active collaborations with international research partners. These interdisciplinary partnerships foster innovative solutions and contribute to meaningful advances in oral health research.

  • Assist in shaping an overarching strategy for scholarship and discovery that elevates the school and university with a focus on interdisciplinary and translational research.
  • Partner with the dean, school leadership, faculty, and students and the university to advance Biomaterials & Regenerative Medicine research.
  • Serve as a driving force behind interdisciplinary collaborations and translational research across the school and university with a clear application in dental medicine.
  • Grow the overall research volume through grants by increasing the number of the overall number of proposals submitted.
  • Increase the variety of funding mechanisms including large multidisciplinary grants, center grants, training grants, and other funding sources aimed at advancing scholarship and discovery within the school and university.
  • Help shape strategies to build research and innovation within the school and university through interdisciplinary collaborations aimed at advancing dental medicine.
  • Foster an equitable, diverse and inclusive environment that focuses on continuous improvement, best practices, and ongoing professional development.
  • Promote excellence in research by working with school leadership to develop a sustainable research infrastructure that meets the ongoing and evolving needs of a growing research enterprise.
  • Ensure that students engage in a variety of hands-on experiential learning opportunities focused on cross-disciplinary research and individual student interests.
  • A terminal degree along with a proven track record of distinguished scholarship and funded research, preferably from the NIH, to qualify for tenure at the associate professor of full professor rank.
  • An eminent record of advancing research and scholarly activities at a research-intensive university, institute, or center.
  • A proven track record of promoting and supporting research interests and collaborations across an institution with the support of external funding partners.
  • An ability to provide a clear vision and strategy aimed at achieving research goals and objectives.
  • A keen understanding of various funding mechanisms including federal, foundation, and private funding.
  • An enthusiasm for collaborating with other disciplines to create cross-campus partnerships.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills demonstrated by the ability to interact with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
