The Endoscopy Technician is a crucial member of the healthcare team responsible for the infection prevention of endoscope preparation critical for patient safety. By reprocessing endoscopes, they must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to preclean, leak test, decontaminate, inspect, disinfect, transport, and store endoscopes in accordance with industry standards, guidelines, regulations, and manufacturer's instructions for use. The technician provides assistance to nurses and physicians during procedures, assists with all types of endoscopic procedures, including emergencies, and helps in obtaining biopsy specimens and polyps as directed by the physician under the direct supervision of an RN. The technician maintains a professional working relationship with all members of the unit and promotes positive public relations for the hospital. They observe and maintain isolation precautions, follow hand washing guidelines, and provide safety and comfort measures for patients. The technician is responsible for maintaining accurate records and logs related to reprocessing scopes and QA monitoring, and they enhance the attitude and teamwork of the unit to facilitate a positive work environment. They must maintain the skill level needed for an Endoscopy technician by completing all yearly competencies and training, and they demonstrate responsibility by following the daily schedule to ensure the proper type of endoscope is available for the physician.
