About The Position

The Endoscopy Technician is a crucial member of the healthcare team responsible for the infection prevention of endoscope preparation critical for patient safety. This role involves the reprocessing of endoscopes, demonstrating the knowledge and skills necessary to preclean, leak test, decontaminate, inspect, disinfect, transport, and store endoscopes in accordance with industry standards, guidelines, regulations, and manufacturer's instructions for use. The technician also assists nurses and physicians during endoscopic procedures, including emergencies, utilizing endoscopes, accessories, and any therapeutic equipment needed for the procedure. Responsibilities include obtaining biopsy specimens and polyps as directed by the physician under the direct supervision of an RN. The technician must maintain a professional working relationship with all members of the unit and promote positive public relations for the hospital. They are responsible for maintaining accurate records related to the reprocessing of scopes and QA monitoring, as well as ensuring safety and comfort measures for patients.

Responsibilities

  • Reprocess endoscopes by precleaning, leak testing, decontaminating, inspecting, disinfecting, transporting, and storing in accordance with industry standards.
  • Assist nurses and physicians during endoscopic procedures, including emergencies.
  • Obtain biopsy specimens and polyps as directed by the physician under RN supervision.
  • Maintain professional relationships with unit members and physicians.

  • Maintain accurate records and logs related to reprocessing scopes and QA monitoring.
  • Label specimens and record them in the specimen logbook.
  • Observe and maintain isolation precautions and standard precautions on all patients.
  • Follow hand washing guidelines and utilize two patient identifiers.
  • Provide and maintain safety and comfort measures for patients.
  • Initiate and maintain a friendly, professional rapport with patients.
  • Respond to patients/family needs in a timely manner.
  • Follow HIPAA guidelines to ensure patient confidentiality.
  • Enhance teamwork and facilitate a positive work environment.
  • Maintain skill level by completing yearly competencies and mandatory training.
  • Demonstrate personal and professional growth by attending in-services/seminars.
  • Follow HR policies and participate in the orientation and training of new employees.
  • Follow the daily schedule to ensure the proper type of endoscope is available for the physician.
  • Set up the procedure room prior to the case and properly test the scope.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and report malfunctioning equipment.
  • Efficiently turn the room over between cases, including proper pre-cleaning of scopes.
  • Stock rooms with necessary supplies at the end of the day.
