The Endoscopy Technician is a crucial member of the healthcare team responsible for the infection prevention of endoscope preparation critical for patient safety. This role involves reprocessing endoscopes, demonstrating the knowledge and skills necessary to preclean, leak test, decontaminate, inspect, disinfect, transport, and store endoscopes in accordance with industry standards, guidelines, regulations, and manufacturer's instructions for use. The technician assists nurses and physicians during procedures, including emergencies, utilizing endoscopes, accessories, and any therapeutic equipment needed for the procedure. They also assist in obtaining biopsy specimens and polyps as directed by the physician and under the direct supervision of an RN. The technician maintains a professional working relationship with all members of the unit and promotes positive public relations for the hospital. They are responsible for maintaining accurate records and logs related to the reprocessing of scopes and QA monitoring, as well as properly labeling and recording specimens. The technician observes and maintains isolation precautions, follows hand washing guidelines, and provides safety and comfort measures for patients. They initiate and maintain a friendly, professional rapport with patients, respond to their needs in a timely manner, and follow HIPAA guidelines to ensure patient confidentiality. The technician enhances the attitude and teamwork of the unit, accepts assignments without hesitation, and demonstrates flexibility in response to the needs of the unit. They maintain their skill level by completing yearly competencies and mandatory training, participate in the orientation and training of new employees, and adhere to HR policies. The technician demonstrates responsibility by following the daily schedule to ensure the proper type of endoscope is available for the physician, setting up the procedure room, troubleshooting equipment, and efficiently turning the room over between cases.
