The Endoscopy Tech works with independence and self-direction to ensure all necessary elements are in place for each endoscopic procedure. During the orientation/training and development as an Endoscopy Tech and in collaboration with the Endoscopic Tech staff, perform responsibilities necessary to assist physicians/ nurses and stock, clean, and maintain equipment supplies required to deliver endoscopic care at Kaweah Health facilities.

Requirements

  • CA Licensed Vocational Nurse or CA Respiratory Care Practitioner license
  • BLS
  • High School degree or GED
  • Manual dexterity is necessary to grasp and handle a variety of small, delicate instruments and sound eye-hand coordination to adjust and assemble instruments and equipment.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, demanding environment, responding to multiple emerging situations on any given shift.
  • Ability to handle problems in a courteous and tactful manner.
  • Must have good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Work efficiently with other diverse work groups and departments.
  • Basic computer knowledge is preferred

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in sterile processing or related field.
  • Strongly prefer experience in hospital and/or surgery setting.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology/GI anatomy-physiology and clinical application of instrumentation and equipment preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assists Gastroenterologists/Physicians and nurses with direct patient care during endoscopic procedures.
  • Passes procedure-specific instruments/supplies to the physician during the procedure.
  • Assists with the positioning of the patient and other comfort measures.
  • Follows hospital policy on proper PPE use without guidance or reminders.
  • Sets up procedures, labels all fluids, and conducts equipment prechecks.
  • Under the physician's direction, obtain biopsies, polypectomies, foreign body removal, esophageal dilatation, and control bleeding.
  • Assists with placement of Peg/ J Tubes.
  • Cleans procedure room between patients to Endo standards and can verbalize understanding of dry times.
  • Identifies proper scopes for the procedure and physicians' preferences.
  • Properly handles scopes per manufacturer's guidelines.
  • Knows the different medications and their use for the procedures.
  • Cleans scope immediately following the procedure.
  • Properly labels and documents specimens obtained.
  • Ensures safe patient care by assisting with placement of NIBP, SA02 sensor, cardiac monitoring leads, and oral suctioning.
  • Anticipates physician needs during specific cases.
  • Uses sophisticated monitoring devices in proper manner.
  • Ensures proper functioning of all endoscopes and reporting problems to Clinical Engineering.
  • Ensures carts are functioning and adequately stocked.
  • Prepares and maintains Endoscopy machine/equipment at the beginning of each day, between cases, and before leaving for the day.
  • Provides appropriate procedure-specific equipment for all Endoscopy procedure rooms.
  • Transports scopes/equipment to and from advanced endoscopy suite for procedure room.
  • Collects and transports soiled equipment for decontamination and sterilization.
  • Disinfects EKG lead wires, 02 SAT probe, NIBP cuff and surfaces of Endoscopy machine/care between patient use.
  • Cleans, disinfects, high-level disinfects equipment in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and hospital policy.
  • Cleans and decontaminates equipment from: Endoscopy Unit, Pulmonary Department
  • Works independently in the decontamination room.
  • Verbalizes proper expiration period for chemicals used in the decontamination room.
  • Accurately documents in logbooks related to the cleaning room tasks.
  • Effectively cleans in all areas according to the high-level disinfecting process.
  • Responsible for being On-call for any emergent or urgent procedures during non-business hours.
  • Assists gastroenterologist/nurse with emergent procedures.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and services appropriate to the population served on the assigned unit or work area.
  • Knowledgeable of growth and development for all patient/family cultural, linguistic, spiritual, gender, and age specific needs.
  • Able to effectively communicate and care for patient and family as reflected in the Plan for Provision of Care.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
